Warning: Spoilers ahead forUncanny X-Men#13!

Rogue’s risque outfit from her time in the Savage Land is both a classic look and one of theX-Men’smost controversial hero redesigns, but Marvel is one-upping Rogue’s most revealing costumewith none other than her husband, Gambit. Rogue’s Savage Land attire has been a point of debate since its conception in the 90s, which begs the question of how fans will feel about Remy LeBeau’s latest look.

Uncanny X-Men#13, written by Gail Simone, with art by David Marquez, follows up on Gambit acquiring the Left Eye of Agamotto from the dragon, Sadurang, in the first issue; now, the dragon returns to whisk Gambit off in the middle of the nightto the Savage Landswith nothing on except his underwear. While in the Savage Land, Gambit is attacked by a dinosaur, and forced to fight in a state of minimal attire, swinging from vines and throwing cards at the prehistoric creature.

While not as strikingly designed asRogue’s infamous Savage Land costume, Gambit certainly has Rogue beat in terms of fan service.

Appearing inUncanny X-Men#269 by Jim Lee and Art Thibert, Rogue’s Savage Land costume was a pivotal, yet controversial moment in X-Men history, not just for Rogue’s attire but for the hinted attraction between Rogue and the much older villain, Magneto. A critique of the costume is how it could be viewed as objectifying Rogue by reducing her character to a revealing ensemble. Though the outfit only had a brief appearance, Rogue’s Savage Land costume has continued to reappear in X-Men media, as well as within asolo series retelling Rogue’s time in the Savage Land.

Gambit running around with his abs on full display shares a similar look that will undoubtedly remind fans of Rogue’s Savage Land costume.

Gambit’s revealing apparel inUncanny X-Men#13 is much less intricate,as the card-wielding hero is only in a pair of black boxers, as opposed to the suggestively torn-up costume Rogue wore. Nevertheless, Gambit running around with his abs on full display shares a similar look that will undoubtedly remind fans ofRogue’s Savage Land costume. How long Gambit will stay in the Savage Land and whether he will receive similar treatment is to be seen, but it’s unlikely the Cajun will get nearly as much fanfare or conflict as Rogue’s attire still does.

X-Men’s Latest Remy Lebeau Look Is More Revealing Than Rogue’s Controversial Outfit

Gambit’s nearly naked look is arguably much more revealing than Rogue’s Savage Land costume and potentially addresses the critique of a double standard between how women and men are portrayed in comics. Superheroes are infamous for their skin-tight costumes, with X-Men like Wolverine running around bare-chested all the time, and Ka-Zar, whom Rogue teamed up with during her Savage Land arc, sharing a similar fit to Gambit’s inUncanny X-Men#13. However, Wolverine and Gambit have not received as much engagement, or are the subject of questionable fan service, the way Rogue is with her Savage Land costume.

I’m Sorry, But Marvel’s Defense of Rogue’s Skimpiest Costume Makes No Sense

Rogue’s iconic Savage Land design has made a return to the X-Men franchise, but Marvel’s explanation for this look doesn’t fix its glaring issues.

Despite Remy’s attire not being as emphasized, it still serves as a piece of fan service that is surprisingly more risque than his wife’s prior redesign. Gambit’s time in the Savage Land appears to be a brief detour from theX-Men’s main overarching goals, yet there is the possibility that Gambit will stay in the Savage Land to carry out his unfinished business with the dragon Sadurang. Not only isGambit’s outfit, or lack thereof, a conceivable response to Rogue’s scandalous costume, buthis adventure to the Savage Land paints an interesting overall parallel toRogue’s previous journey.
