Blizzard made an unexpected announcement that BlizzCon 2025 is being canceled, and now we’re left wondering what the future holds forWorld of WarcraftandDiablo 4, which could’ve benefited from the annual event. Of all the games that are active from Blizzard, it’s likely thatOverwatch 2will suffer the most from this cancelation. Meanwhile, I expectWorld of WarcraftandDiablo 4will be unfazed by BlizzCon missing a year.

Generally, BlizzCon is a chance for players to come together and share their love for various Blizzard games. It is also an opportunity for Blizzard to showcase its newest games, seasons, expansions, and other updates. While it’s unfortunate that we won’t have that this year,it’snot a massive loss forWoWandDiabloplayers. At this point, I don’t think there’s much to announce about either game that we don’t already know.

We Have A Decent Idea Of What’s Next For WoW

Future Expansions Were Already Revealed

WithWoW’s housing system revealedand a roadmap for the next few years of expansions,World of Warcraftdoesn’t need BlizzCon to build hype for what’s in the works. Plenty of players—myself included—are excited for the game’s future given what we know about it and becauseThe War Withinmade it feel like players are finally being heard and addressed. Housing being revealed is already proof of that since players have asked for it for years.

Canceling BlizzCon 2025 Could Be The Final Nail In Overwatch 2’s Coffin

Overwatch 2 needs to keep up its momentum right now, and the lack of Blizzard’s big event could be one of the biggest blows to that opportunity.

In the meantime, other features have been added. Large patches tend to include a mix of new campaign quests and side content, like Undermined. Then, events like Plunderstorm and Turbulent Timeways keep you invested enough in the game to continue playing. With this rotation of new content being added and ongoing events, it’s hard to feel like there’s a content drought, even though that wasn’t the case for every expansion. It seems like theWoWteam has figured out their strategy and refined it to keep players playing.

Diablo 4 Is Hyping Its Next Season Without BlizzCon

Season 8 Brings New Changes

Similar toWoW,Diablo 4is in a position where it doesn’t need BlizzCon to announce new content. Even if it was held, there might not be any big announcements for the game since we’re seeing regular updates with seasonal content, and each season brings unique features and changes. In that way, these updates almost act like mini-expansions, letting players build characters in new ways and benefit from unique powers, as we have with Season 7’s Witchcraft Powers. We’ve also seen content like Nightmare Dungeons to help keep players invested.

Every Boss Power In Diablo 4’s 2.2.0 PTR Update

Diablo 4’s 2.2.0 PTR Update includes the ability to siphon new Boss Powers, and there are twenty-four different Boss Powers with unique effects.

Now, we’re again seeing Blizzard listen to player feedback aboutDiabloas well, asboss fights will be receiving updatesto make them more complex, as the lack of endgame content has been a common complaint. In addition to that,Diablo 4is adding boss power siphoning, meaning that you may be rewarded with the ability to use certain boss powers when you defeat the bosses that have them. There’s not a lack of exciting updates coming for the game, so having the added hype of BlizzCon for this year wouldn’t have a huge impact anyway.

Both Are Safe Games For Blizzard, With Dedicated Players

BlizzCon Is Just A Bonus

World of WarcraftandDiablo 4are safe bets for Blizzard, especially in their current states. We already haveso much to look forward to in both gamesthat I can’t imagine that announcements that could’ve been made at BlizzCon 2025 for either one would’ve been groundbreaking or something the community hasn’t already had some idea about. At most, it would’ve been a fun time for players to gather together and celebrate what they love, and it’s always a shame when circumstances change and no longer allow that. Hopefully, 2026 will give players that chance to gather at BlizzCon.

Most games, includingWorld of Warcraft, are unlikely to be majorly impacted by the lack of this event; it could also mean that Blizzard should reconsider the path of other games that have been in a rocky place, likeOverwatch 2.

Of course, it’s disappointing to have another gaming event end up being canceled, and it feels like there are fewer of them each year. Luckily, it looks like this is a one-off event and that future BlizzCons are likely to continue being held as far as we know. While most games, includingWorld of Warcraft, are unlikely to be majorly impacted by the lack of this event, it could also mean that Blizzard should reconsider the path of other games that have been in a rocky place, likeOverwatch 2.

Released in 2004, the game has seen a multitude of DLC updates and still sees tons of players logging in each day.
