As the year comes to a close, it’s becoming more unclear whether aNintendo Directwill be released before the end of 2024. Directs are always highly anticipated as the main source for Nintendo’s biggest and most exciting gaming announcements. However, after the absence of a Nintendo Direct duringits typical September slot, the first time in years this has occurred, doubt has been cast on another major presentation being broadcast before the new year.
It’s all but confirmed that Nintendo is in the midst of a transitional period at the moment. As the reveal of the Switch 2 edges ever closer, Nintendo’s current console is seeing a drop in momentum as the company heads into 2025. And, as preparations begin for Nintendo’s bold new era, it could mean that fans are left in the dark about the company’s future for quite some time.

A Nintendo Direct In Late 2024 Doesn’t Feel Worth It
The Switch Is Steadily Approaching The End Of Its Lifespan
A new Nintendo Direct doesn’t feel worth it at this time. This is especially the case if Nintendo intends to hold back theSwitch 2 reveal, as it would result in a presentation lacking in content. There are only two major titles currently releasing for the Switch in 2025, those beingPokémon Legends: Z-AandMetroid Prime 4: Beyond. Both titles' development for the Switch has been well-documented for some time, and so their planned releases feel more coincidental to when the games will be ready, rather than as part of a grander plan for further Switch releases in 2025.
Every Pokémon Confirmed For Pokémon Legends Z-A (So Far)
Pokémon Legends: Z-A will be set in the Kalos region & is sure to have many of the familiar friends from the X & Y games. Here’s all confirmed so far.
While updates on these titles will be highly anticipated, making a full presentation just for this doesn’t feel worthwhile. This is only emphasized by the fact thatPokémon Legends: Z-Awill likely be reserved for a separate Pokémon Presents showcase, leaving onlyMetroid Prime 4as the Switch’s other major upcoming title. A full Direct being made just so that one title can be showcased feels like a waste, and it is worthless at this point for Nintendo to announce anything new for a console almost certainly on its way out.

Will The Next Nintendo Direct Reveal The Switch 2?
Nintendo Will Want To Showcase Their Next Console
With all this in mind, it’d be safe to assume that the release of the next major Nintendo Direct hinges entirely on the Switch 2 reveal. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has already stated that an update will be given by March 2025. Whether that announcement comes before the company’s set deadline is still unclear.
With a Switch 2 update just around the corner, Nintendo’s next presentation will almost certainly be unmissable.

If thatupdate is planned for March 2025, it would certainly be a bad move to move forward with a Direct now. It would simply divert attention away from the Switch 2 when fans are already aware a reveal is incoming. In this case, it’s probably safe to assume Nintendo’s next big presentation will focus on the Switch 2 and its own line-up of games, which may explain the Indie World Showcase that arrived in Sepetember instead of the full Direct.
If Nintendo chooses to follow a similar strategy to the predecessor, then the company might hold back the software reveals for a later date, sticking purely to a hardware focus for the initial reveal, once again ruling out a full Direct anytime soon. Whatever the case, it’s clearly not worth holding out hope for anotherNintendo Directthis year. Yet, with a Switch 2 update just around the corner, Nintendo’s next presentation will almost certainly be unmissable.
