Events inMy Hero Academiatook a major turn when Himiko Toga consumed the blood of the deceased villain Jin Bubaigawara (Twice), allowing her to not only transform into him, but to utilize his Quirk as well, creating a flood of Twice doubles across the battlefield. However, Toga attempts to create doubles of Shigaraki and others as well, and soon finds she can’t use their Quirks. So, why is that?

Back in season 5, episode 21,Toga’s Quirk underwent an Awakening, allowing her to not only take on the appearance of someone whose blood she consumed, but use their Quirk as well. This was initially revealed when Toga transformed into Ochaco Uraraka, and used her Zero Gravity Quirk to levitate the attacking members of the Meta Liberation Army, then dropped them from a great height, killing them instantly.

However, in order to use someone’s Quirk while transformed into them, Toga had to meet a few conditions first.

Toga Must Care Deeply For Someone to Use Their Quirk

Toga’s Quirk is Dominated by Her Feelings

The most obvious of the conditions Toga must meet is that she needs to know what that person’s Quirk is and roughly how it works. Because of her fascination with Ochaco, Toga knew how to use Zero Gravity already, so that wasn’t an issue. The other, more difficult condition is thatToga can only use the Quirk of a person for whom she loves, or at least cares about deeply. Her obsession with Ochaco apparently qualified, allowing her to use Zero Gravity.

Toga also cared deeply for Jin, who waskilled during the Paranormal Liberation War by Hawks. Because of this, and the sample of his blood that she had, Toga was confident she would be able to utilize Jin’s Quirk if she transformed into him as well. This turned out to be true, and upon consuming the blood, Toga was able to create doubles with Twice’s appearance that were able to use his Quirk as well, leading to an exponential growth in the number of Toga-Twice clones, as each double would go on to double again.

My Hero Academia’s Most Underrated Villain Just Helped Create The Best Episode of Season 7 Yet

Deku has fought many fascinating villains in My Hero Academia’s storyline, but one’s dramatic return helped make one of the anime’s best episodes yet.

Despite having the appearance of Twice, Toga’s doubles are in fact doubles of her, with her personality, not Jin’s. That means that theToga doubles were also bound by the restrictions of Toga’s Quirk. While Jin could create doubles that were indistinguishable from the real thing, even able to use their Quirks, the doubles that Toga created were bound by her Quirk’s requirement that she feel deeply about the person she was copying in order to use their Quirk. To put it simply, Toga just didn’t feel as strongly about Dabi, Shigaraki, and All for One as she did for Jin.

If Toga Could Use Shigaraki’s Quirk, the Villains Would Instantly Win

Toga’s Clones Could’ve Ended the Battle In an Instant If They Could Use Other Quirks

Toga did attempt to create doubles ofDabi, Shigaraki, and All for One, but these doubles found they were unable to use the original’s Quirk, and were thus easily dispatched. Toga was a bit disturbed to find out that she didn’t care strongly enough for her allies to use their Quirks. However,if she had been able to use their Quirks the way Jin would’ve been able to, the battle would have been over within seconds. The battlefield would be flooded by duplicates of these powerful Quirk users, incinerating and decaying anything that happened to be in front of them.

Tsuyu Asui made this observation during the battle in season 7, episode 17, although Tsuyu didn’t know exactly why Toga was unable to use their Quirks. Toga was primarily dismayed by the fact that, while still potent, her attempt at the Sad Man’s Parade could never be as deadly as Jin’s would have been, since he would’ve been able to create clones of Dabi, Shigaraki, and All for One that could use their Quirks. This led to the original Toga having something of a breakdown on the battlefield, making her easier for Ochaco and Tsuyu to spot.

The restriction on Toga’s Quirk is the sole factor which kept her version of the Sad Man’s Parade from being a worst-case scenario. If Toga had somehow found a love for Dabi or Shigaraki within her, and gained the ability to use their Quirks, the heroes would’ve been severely outmatched, to the point where they would have been wiped out almost instantly. This emphasizes what a special relationship Jin and Toga had, making hisMy Hero Academiadeath all the more tragic.
