The newest sitcom inThe Big Bang Theoryuniverse is a spin-off to the prequelYoungSheldon, exploring how Montana Jordan’s Georgie and Emily Osment’s Mandy set out to start a family on their own. In the aptly-named episode, “Thanksgiving,” theCooper and McAllister families come together to celebrate the holidaysfor the first time since George Sr.’s (Lance Barber) passing inYoungSheldon’sfinal season.
WithGeorgie & Mandy’s First Marriagehaving aired its first seasonal special, Holland explained why another late-year holiday won’t feature in its first season toTV Insider. With the Cooper and McAllister families coming together, he felt that they had created a story that would carry a similar tone to what they’d planned anddidn’t want to bring the cast together again too soon.
We’re not doing a Christmas episode this year. We’ve done the Thanksgiving episode, which was great and it felt like going into Christmas… sometimes it’s hard to do those episodes and not have the whole family come in.”
With how important a first Christmas will be to the two families due to George Sr.’s death and Cece’s first Christmas, Holland argued that it would be difficult to do the story without assembling the family and thatthey didn’t want to retread familiar ground so soon within the series’run.
If you’re gonna do Christmas, and it’s Cece’s [first] Christmas, how do you not have Mary and Meemaw as a part of it? And we had just had them in for Thanksgiving and it felt like it might be treading similar ground thematically. So we chose Thanksgiving because it was sort of the first big holiday without George Sr.”
