As one of the most popular new games of 2024,Black Myth: Wukonghas garnered a large fanbase that helped it win the Player’s Choice award at The Game Awards 2024, multiple category wins at The 2024 Steam Awards, and more. Heading into 2025, though, there’s still the question of if, or when,Black Myth: Wukongwill release on Xbox. Currently, the game is only available on PlayStation 5 and PC, but a new statement from the game’s director has shed some light on the status of an Xbox release.
In a comment onWeibo, posted and roughly translated by userFidler_2K on Reddit,Black Myth: Wukongdirector Feng Ji commented that theXbox Series S has held back efforts to release the game on Xbox. The explanation cites the console’s 10GB of RAM as a major limiting factor.

Notably, this statement conflicts with previous reports and speculation thatBlack Myth’s lack of an Xbox release was due to exclusivity deals between developer Game Science and other parties. It explains why PlayStation never marketedBlack Myth: Wukongas an exclusive, something that never lined up with those rumors.
Xbox Series S Has Caused Issues For Other Games
Black Myth: Wukong Wouldn’t Be The First Game To Have Issues With The Series S
It wouldn’t be the first time the Series S has caused significant problems for a gameand delayed its release on the platform, with the most notable example beingBaldur’s Gate 3in 2023. Originally released in August of that year,BG3received a PS5 port just one month later but took significantly longer to get an Xbox release in December. This, according to comments from the developers, was mostly due toissues surrounding Xbox’s feature parity policybetween the Series X and Series S, withBG3’s local co-op split-screen mode being too intensive for the latter to handle.
Black Myth: Wukong Review: The Soulslike Action Hype Train Is A Little Off-Rails
Despite the exceptional qualities of Black Myth: Wukong, the souls-like RPG has some necessary improvements to make, for a truly immersive experience.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s eventual release on Xbox was the result of acompromise that removed local split-screen co-op from the Series S versionof the game. Unfortunately forBlack Myth: Wukong, however, there doesn’t seem to be any single equivalent feature that could be removed to get the game to work on the Series S. Notably,Black Myth: Wukongstill has optimization issues on more powerful platforms, with users reporting poor performance on PS5 and even some relatively high-end PCs.

Our Take: When Black Myth: Wukong Might Come To Xbox
Black Myth: Wukong’s Xbox Release Will (Probably) Be Later Rather Than Sooner
Unfortunately, there’s no real way to speculate about a potential date for an Xbox release, other than thatit probably won’t be any time soon. With the limited specs of the Series S apparently being the single biggest issue preventing release, it’s unknown how long it might take for Game Science’s optimization efforts to get it to work. Any sort of exception to have the game released exclusively on the Series X would be unprecedented for thecurrent Xbox generation, and a further breach of Microsoft’s feature parity policy between its two current-gen consoles.
The 2024 Steam Awards Winners Have Been Revealed, Includes A Much-Deserved GOTY Win And Some More Surprising Picks
The 2024 Steam Awards winners have been announced with some well-known titles, with one game emerging in the lead by winning three categories.
Hopefully,Black Myth: Wukongwill release on Xbox sooner rather than later, but the game will seemingly need a vast amount of optimization work to run on the Xbox Series S, which is apparently a major roadblock. While an Xbox release forBlack Myth: Wukongis in the works, it might be a long while before it can see the light of day.
