Viola’s Identity in Bayonetta 3, Explained

When Viola first shows up in Bayonetta 3, we don’t know all that much about her. We just learn that she’s essentially a multiverse traveler with the ability to jump between various parallel universes. Her mission is to collect enough Chaos Gears from the universes so that she can unlock a path to Singularity, an evil being who’s trying to throw the entire world into chaos.

to get those Chaos Gears, however, she enlists the help of Bayonetta, and they start jumping through different worlds together.

As the story goes on, we start to notice that she seems to have some sort of connection to Bayonetta and Luka in particular. When she first meets Luka, for instance, she shows obvious signs of recognition, though it isn’t explained why.

Towards the end of the story, as Bayonetta loses in her fight against Singularity, Viola calls out to her and calls her “mummy”. It’s then revealed that Viola is actually the child of Bayonetta and Luka, which would also explain why her companion is named Cheshire. In the first game, Bayonetta often referred to Luka as Cheshire, and her companion name is likely a homage to that.

It’s not explained when or how Luka and Bayonetta had a child, but considering that Bayonetta 3 is all about traversing the multiverse, it’s likely that the two had coupled up in another universe, and then gave birth to Viola.

At the end of the game, Bayonetta is seemingly consumed by the darkness, but before she goes, she passes on the name of Bayonetta to Viola. This paves the way for Viola to become the next Umbra Witch, as she starts hunting demons in Cereza’s stead.
