Summary

The creator of the celebrated animated seriesX-Men ‘97has just pitched a story for a possibleBlademovie in theMCUstarring Wesley Snipes. While the MCU drags its feet on releasing its newlive-action take on Blade starring Mahershala Ali, Wesley Snipes’cameo inDeadpool & Wolverinehas sparked excitement over a possible fourth installment in Snipes’Bladefranchise. Ryan Reynolds has championed this return, raising the potential for a “Logan-like” spinoff movie to retire the character properly.

Beau De Mayo, the creator and head writer forX-Men ‘97, may have just fueled this excitement with his pitch for a fourthBlade, which he posted viaX/Twitter.This pitch explains Blade’s long period of absence sinceBlade: Trinity, which was released in December 2004, by stating that Blade has been entombed for several years. It also introduces a character hitherto unadapted to live-action, Brother Voodoo, who resurrects Blade to quell the vampire dystopia that the modern world has become. To cap it off, De Mayo suggests that it should emulate Kurosawa. His pitch can be seen below:

Why Beau DeMayo’s Wesley Snipes MCU Blade Movie Pitch Is Perfect

It’s As Macabre And Gothic As Blade Should Be

WithX-Men ‘97being so universally acclaimed, there is certainly evidence to support the promise of this pitch, which suggests that De Mayo’s original ideas can help refresh two franchises - the MCU and Wesley Snipes’ Blade - in one fell swoop. WithDeadpool & Wolverineproving that the MCU can smash an R-rating, this Blade pitch is even more exciting as it enticesthe MCU’s next R-rated rompwhile pivoting from the levity ofDeadpool & Wolverineto a much darker, dystopian setting.

So far, movies likeAvengers: Infinity WarandDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessare the darkest the MCU has dared to go. De Mayo’sBlade, with the imagery of human cattle and a no-holds-barred interpretation of the Darkhold, could finally be the MCU’s answer toLogan, whose grit and gore were a breath of fresh air within the superhero genre and met with widespread acclaim. To liken it to the work of Kurosawa - the legendary director ofSeven Samurai- would also make the movie stand out as a unique piece of MCU history.

The MCU would struggle to explain the presence of the Darkhold, which was ostensibly destroyed in every universe by Wanda inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Furthermore, there seems to be a big appetite to see Brother Voodoo adapted into live-action, if responses to De Mayo’s pitch are anything to go by. Brother Voodoo/Jericho Drumm is one of Marvel Comics’ lesser-known but more fascinating superheroes whose powers have seen him adopt the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme and beg for a big-screen adaptation in the MCU. In the absence of details surrounding the story for the MCU’sBlade, this may still be a possibility down the line, while Snipes’ Blade reprisal unfortunately looks less likely for now.
