NYT Mini Crossword: 8 Strategies To Solve It Fast
This tricky little five by five crossword isn’t always as easy as it looks; here are a couple easy tips and tricks to beat your friends' times!
After you follow the clues, there is a chance you might still need a few more clues to help you get over the finish line. To that aim, here areall the category nameswhich can often be enough to solve the puzzle.

___POOL
NAVY
PINTO
For me, I solved the purple category first today and then felt stumped about how I missed the “easy” category. Looking around I didn’t see anything that seemed obvious. PINTO I immediately thought of as a horse coat, likely a result of my horse-girl years. I was not aware of MUNG beans, but Ieventually realized that all the other three were types of beansand figured that that must be what they were. On the bright side, I learned something new about beans today.
HOOK
PULL
I was not immediately sure about this category, as I did not think DRAW really belonged here. DRIVE is a possible candidate for this category, and part of me thought REVERSE might be too. However, I thought both of those words might go with NEUTRAL as a car category, which ended up being correct. Before I knew that though, I was debating which word belonged here with the others and eventually guessed that it must be DRAW. I’m not sure I’m happy thatall these words supposedly mean “attract”but they are the best words for it in this puzzle.
9 Helpful Tips To Beat The Password Game (& 1 Useless One)
The Password Game can be frustrating as it uses complex mechanics that can be difficult to figure out, even with help.
NEUTRAL
REVERSE
This was the last category I guessed, which is odd because it is things I would normally see every day. In fact, I hadDRIVE, NEUTRAL, and REVERSE all selected multiple timesand could not figure out what the last one was. It occurred to me after the fact that neither of my past two cars have had an “L” on the gear shift, and perhaps that is why I forgot about it. Luckily, I also had London Tipton to remind me that there is an L in P-R-N-D-L.
LIVER
WHIRL
I got this one first and funnily enough it was because of WHIRL. I was trying to figure out what WHIRL could be, andall I could come up with was “whirlpool.“Upon seeing that, I also saw DEAD and thought it might not be far off. CAR was next, as my friends and I used to carpool to school many times. When I tried to find the last word, I remembered that Liverpool did exist, and it helped that I had not really looked at KIDNEY at that point in time or I might have second-guessed myself.
