Disney’s 2009 animated hitThe Princess and the Frogwas getting a sequel in the form of a Disney+ original series entitledTiana, but the series is now canceled. Based on the eponymous fairytale story,The Princess and the Frogfollows an aspiring restaurateur named Tiana who goes on a whirlwind bayou adventure after meeting a prince who has been turned into a frog. Noted for its hand-drawn aesthetic andcatchy New Orleans-inspired score,The Princess and the Frogfelt like the last glimpse of the Disney Renaissance before the studio moved exclusively toward CGI animation.

Hope of a sequel had been high ever since the film’s debut, but little came of a potentialPrincess and the Frogfranchise as the years ticked by. However, Disney began planning a TV series that would act as a direct sequel and follow Tiana after she got her happily ever after and her restaurant. Though details surroundingTianawere scarce, it offered Disney a chance to capture a bit more of the classic magic found inThe Princess and the Frogand potentially introduce Tiana to a new audience. Unfortunately, that won’t be happening anytime soon.

Tiana’s Original Voice Actor Was Signed On

Even thoughTianawas stuck in development for the better part of five years, the promising project did still have one big selling factor. The cast ofTianawas largely unformed, butoriginal Tiana voice actor Anika Noni Rose was signed on to reprise her roleasthe Disney princesswith a heart of gold and a love for cooking.Other characters fromThe Princess and the Frogwould have presumably returnedas well, though no one else was ever officially signed on. Disney’s Tiana Story Details

Tiana Travels To Maldonia

Like most of Disney’s classic princess movies, the ending ofThe Princess and the Frogsaw Tiana get everything she wanted from her handsome new husband to her beautiful restaurant. This leftTianain an interesting place, as the story was never exactly clear. However, teases from director Joyce Sherri at 2024’s D23 event suggested thatTiana would travel to her new kingdom of Maldonia and go on a journey of self-discovery once again.

Sherri also hinted at another magical adventure, and though she probably wouldn’t have gotten turned into an amphibian again, Tiana would likely find herself dealing with powerful forces beyond her control. What those could be is probably what tied the project up in development, though it’s highly unlikely that the sequel TV series would repeat the story beats found in the film (or bring back the villainous Dr. Facilier). Whatever was going to happen inTianait would have been a character-driven narrative that attempted to capture some ofthe classic Disney magicfound inThe Princess and the Frog.
