25 years afterStar Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, one of the biggest mysteries aboutAnakin Skywalkerthat remains inStar Warsmay finally be revealed inAhsokaseason 2.Anakin Skywalker’sStar Warstimelinehas dominated the franchise for decades, yet there are still manythings that make no sense about Anakin. Perhaps for that reason, his story has continued to expand even after the Skywalker Saga came to a close withStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

This has been particularly true of live-action TV shows, as bothObi-Wan KenobiandAhsokasaw Hayden Christensen reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker and have brand-new arcs. InAhsokaseason 1, this included Anakin’s appearances inthe World Between Worldsand, shockingly, as a Force ghost intheAhsokaending. Now,Ahsokaseason 2 has the opportunity to solve a major Anakin Skywalker mystery.

The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy Never Really Explained What The Chosen One Prophecy Meant

The Precise Definition Of “Balance” Remains Elusive

The Phantom Menaceintroduced the concept ofthe Chosen One prophecy, which was said to foretell a person who would bring balance to the Force. InThe Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon Jinn quickly came to believe that, based on Anakin’s incredible strength in the Force and Shmi Skywalker’s claim that Anakin was born without a father, Anakin was the Chosen One. This was why he was so insistent that Anakin be trained even after the Jedi Council had rejected Anakin from the Order.

Even the definition of balance, upon which the entire prophecy hinged, was never clearly defined in the prequels.

Beyond the notion that the Chosen One would bring balance, however, the exact prophecy remained unclear throughout the prequel trilogy. Even the definition of balance, upon which the entire prophecy hinged, was never clearly defined in the prequels. The Jedi frequently referenced Anakin’s destiny to"destroy the Sith,“which suggests that their interpretation of balance was the destruction of the dark side.Star Warshas never confirmed whether this interpretation was correct.

Incredible New Star Wars Theory Finally Explains The Mortis Gods & Their True Connection To Anakin Skywalker’s Chosen One Prophecy

Both the Mortis Gods and Anakin Skywalker’s Chosen One prophecy remain mysterious in Star Wars, but Ahsoka season 2 may finally change that.

The Text Of The Chosen One Prophecy Has Finally Been Revealed

A Canon Star Wars Book Provided The Exact Wording Of The Prophecy

After the prophecy was only referenced in theStar Warsprequel trilogy, a canon book,Star Wars: Master & Apprentice, written by Claudia Gray, finally revealed the exact language of the Chosen One prophecy. The book states:

“A Chosen One shall come, born of no father, and through him will ultimate balance in the Force be restored.”

The Jedi of the High Republic in Star Wars.

This update finally clarified why Qui-Gon Jinn was so convinced Anakin was the Chosen One; from the moment Shmi said there had been no father, Qui-Gon knew the prophecy referred to him.

Notably, evenMaster & Apprenticedoes not explain what balance really means. In fact, this text provided inMaster & Apprenticeseems to only reinforce that the Jedi may have put their own spin on the prophecy in a way that suited their aims. Evidently, the prophecy didn’t directly refer to the Sith whatsoever, nor did it imply that balance meant the dark side being squashed. In light of this, the true meaning of balance—and by extension, the meaning of the prophecy itself—is somethingStar Warsmovies and TV showsstill must explain.

One Subtle Detail In The Chosen One Prophecy Raises Fascinating Questions

Although the language of the Chosen One prophecy did not reveal the true meaning of balance, there was one word within the text that had major implications not only for the prophecy but also for the history of the Force itself. In the prophecy, it says that through the Chosen One, balance in the Force will be"restored.“This means that the Force was previously in balance at some point intheStar Warstimeline.

This raises serious questions about when the Force was in balance, what that meant, and when and how the Force fell out of balance. In terms of when, there are some hints inStar Warscanon. For one, the prophecy is estimated to have been written around 1,500 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin), meaning the prophecy predatesthe High Republic Era. This may mean that the Force was in balance at some point during the Old Republic (25,000-1,000 BBY), at which point it may have lost balance, thus requiring the prophecy.

Baylan Believed Peridea Was Where The Balance Of The Force Was Lost

Ahsoka Season 2 Could Be The Key To These Many Questions

Many questions clearly remain regarding the Chosen One prophecy and the definition and history of the Force being in balance, butAhsokaseason 2may reveal many if not all of these answers. ThroughoutAhsokaseason 1, there were numerous references to the Mortis Gods, most obviously in theAhsokaseason 1 finale when Baylan Skoll stood atop a statue of the Gods on Peridea. Baylan and his hunt for the Gods in particular may be where these answers lie.

Mortis Gods Explained: Star Wars History, Powers, Planet & Importance

The Mortis gods are some of Star Wars’ most powerful Force-wielders, and Dave Filoni is using them to unite The Clone Wars, Rebels, and now Ahsoka.

The Mortis Gods were first seen inStar Wars: The Clone Wars, when Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, and Obi-Wan Kenobi crash-landed on the planet Mortis. It was then that they encountered the Father, the Daughter, and the Son—the three Mortis Gods. The Daughter represents the light side of the Force, the Son represents the dark side, and the Father represents balance in the Force. The Mortis Gods could therefore be the key to understanding true balance in the Force and revealing this curious history regarding the Force losing balance.

The Daughter represents the light side of the Force, the Son represents the dark side, and the Father represents balance in the Force.

This seems especially true given the Father is a canonical being inStar Warswho already embodied balance in the Force before his death at the end of thisClone Warsarc. Surely, if anyone was going to have a firm grasp of the true definition of balance, it would have been him. It’s also worth noting, the Mortis Gods representing the light, the dark, and balance does suggest the Jedi interpreted the prophecy incorrectly by assuming the dark side had to be destroyed.

In addition to Baylan actively seeking information on the Mortis Gods, he is also convinced that Peridea is where the Force fell out of balance. Given the Mortis Gods have such a presence on Peridea, they may be tied in some way to the Force losing balance. Whether they are or not, though,Ahsokaseason 2 is perfectly primed to reveal how balance in the Force was lost.

Perhaps most important of all, the Chosen One himself is now confirmed to be on Peridea. In the final moments ofAhsokaseason 1, Anakin Skywalker appeared as a Force ghost on Peridea, watching over Ahsoka Tano. This makes it seem all the more likely thatAhsokaseason 2 will finally address the remaining questions about the Chosen One prophecy.
