The ITV historical dramaVictoriawas canceled before we got a chance to see season 4, though that doesn’t mean the series' return is completely out of the question. The historical drama seriesVeronicapremiered in 2016, and much like howThe Crowndepicts the life of Queen Elizabeth II,Victoriadepicts the life of Elizabeth’s great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria (Jenna Coleman), beginning at the start of her reign. As part of thePBSMasterpieceanthology seriesin collaboration with ITV,Victoriais a charming, well-crafted, and romantic tale.

Each season ofVictoriacovers a few years of the titular queen’s life, with the first season depicting 1837-1840 and her marriage to Prince Albert (Tom Hughes) and the birth of their first child, Victoria, Princess Royal. Season two covers the events between 1840 and 1849, most notably the Anglo-Afghan War and the 1840s Famine in Ireland. ITV Said Victoria Season 4 Isn’t Happening (For Now)

Victoria Could Possibly Return

Unfortunately for fans ofVictoria, ITV canceled the series in July 2021, over two years after season 3 aired (viaRadioTimes). However, ITV gave an unusually noncommittal statement about the cancelation, saying,

“There are no plans presently to film Victoria, but that’s not to say we won’t revisit the series with the production team at a later date.”

Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman) smiling in The Sandman.

That’s a very vague statement from a network. These broadcasting companies rarely mince words when it comes to canceling a show, it happens so often. In fact, it gives them an opportunity to create some drama if they ever do announce a show is returning. So, for ITV to hedge its bets aboutVictoria’s cancelation is quite unusual. It would suggest thatVictoriais more likely than not to returnat some point. In 2025, it’s nearing four years since that announcement with no progress to show, but it still can’t hurt to hope.

Victoria Actress Jenna Coleman On Season 4’s Cancelation

Coleman Would Like To Play Victoria Again, But Scheduling Will Be Difficult

While the star ofVictoria, Jenna Coleman, has not commented on the 2021 “official” cancelation, she did admit in 2019 that the show would be taking a hiatus after season 3 (viaDigitalSpy),

“It’s definitely going to take a break, bit of a breather and then we’re working out… there’s a lot of conversations, do you start at the Crimean War, or do you start later? I mean there’s too much story, unless I literally did commit until I am 63.”

Victoria

This then turned into a much longer wait than what would be expected with a “break”. A year later, Coleman reiterated that there was still a lot of story left to tell with Queen Victoria (viaTatler),

“There may be another series… There’s too much of a good story.”

She’s very much right about that, there is a lot of story left in Queen Victoria’s life. She was the longest-reigning monarch in British history until Queen Elizabeth IIcame along. The issue is that in the intervening years, Coleman’s star has risen quite high. It may not be easy to tie her down for another season of a historical drama show. As she hasn’t recently commented, it can be hard to know Coleman’s feelings about the project as we get further away from it.

“I’ve always have my eye on the end result because, as far as I’m concerned, even if we only made one season, I need to portray that part of the man’s whole existence. So, yeah, if there’s an appetite, then it would be really nice to finish the story.”

So ifVictoriaseason 4 does become a reality, it sounds like the two most important actors would be willing to return.
