While there has been some criticism surrounding the movie,little of that criticism has been pointed at the effectiveness of its villain or the performance of James Spader. Spader provides a dark, commanding presence to the metallic threat of Ultron, with just enough of Tony Stark’s sarcasm and spunk. A dedicated AI presence that wishes to eradicate humanity makes sense in the MCU, and it will be exciting to see that explored further.
Ross Marquand previously replaced Spader as the voice for Ultron and the Ultron Sentries in their appearances inWhat If…?andDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Marquand also replaced Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull inAvengers: Endgame.
In addition, Vision and Ultron come from a similar place, having both been developed in part in Stark’s lab.
