The Criticco-creator Mike Reiss shared Jay Sherman’s review of Tim Burton’s latest film,Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Reiss co-createdThe Criticwith Al Jean, which originally ran from 1994 to 1995. The seriesfollowed movie critic Jay Sherman (voiced by Jon Lovitz), who hosted a movie review TV show similar toSiskel and Ebert(who also guest starred in the series as themselves). ThroughoutThe Critic, Jay often reviewed a movie on his show by saying “It stinks.” Jay even appeared in a season 6 episode ofThe Simpsons, which was another show that Reiss and Jean had worked on together.

On X,Reissposted an image of Sherman on the set of his showComing Attractions. The image in the post was shown inThe Critic’s opening theme song. In the post, Reiss wrote (as Jay) “BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE stinks stinks.” Check out the review below:

The opening of each episode ofThe Criticwould feature a different short parody of a movie before Jay would say his catchphrase. Jay’s negative reviews would often parody something, with hisBeetlejuice Beetlejuicereview referencing the film’s title.

What Reiss' Post Means For The Critic

Jay Sherman Has Returned For A New Negative Review

Reiss' post ofJay Sherman’sBeetlejuice Beetlejuicereviewis the first time in a whilethatThe Criticaudiences have heard his thoughts on a film. Although the series ended in 1995, Jay has still been brought back a few times. From 2000 to 2001, the character appeared in ten shorts that were released on the internet.

AlthoughBeetlejuice Beetlejuicehas received generally positive reactions from critics and audiences, Jay’s negative review is not surprising.

While Jay’s most memorable appearance onThe Simpsonswas in the season 6 episode"A Star Is Burns," where he came to Springfield to help judge a film festival, he did make a cameo appearance in the 1996 episode “Hurricane Neddy” and the 2004 episode “The Ziff Who Came to Dinner.”
