Black Myth: Wukong, inspired by the classical Chinese storyJourney to the West,was the first major title for stuido Game Science which was formed in 2014 by several ex-Tencent developers. Although the company had made two games in the 2010s,Wukongwas its debut large-scale project.The title sold over 20 million units in its first month after it released in August 2024, making it an instant success. It won players over with a combination of the unique setting, breathtaking visuals, and a challenging butsimplified spin on Souls-like mechanics.

The popularity and success of the game made many believe that it had a shot at winningGame of the Year at the Game Awards this year.
