Terrifier 3director Damien Leone reveals plans for an extended cut of the film, teasing that the extra footage won’t be what audiences are expecting. The third installment in the popularTerrifierfranchise sees Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) return to torment the residents of Miles County as Christmas approaches.Terrifier 3reviewshave been generally positive from critics, and the film has been a big hit in theaters, having grossed $43.8 million and counting at the box office.

During a recent interview withEW, Leone teases some of theTerrifier 3footage that got left on the cutting room floor and how it could end up in a future extended cut of the movie. Leone says that there’s a “very good chance that there’ll be an extended version down the line,” but he also reveals that “it’s not something I’m so eager to do, and also,I don’t think a lot of fans would be happy.” Though audiences might be expecting the extra scenes to fill perceived holes inTerrifier 3, the director says this isn’t the case:

Art the Clown holds a chainsaw in Terrifier 3

“A lot of [fans], they’re expecting the extended cut to be scenes that they imagined were missing. But no, we did not shoot those scenes. So the ‘missing scenes’ they want to see [are] Sienna [Lauren LaVera] going to the Terrifier to retrieve her sword. They want to see what happened with Jonathan [Elliott Fullam], or they think something happened with Art the Clown at the Beta Bash, the big house party. We didn’t shoot those scenes. There’s nothing there that would be in the extended cut.”

As for why those scenes weren’t shot,Leone reveals that he was inspired by the movies of David Lynch, which often leave certain elements up to the imagination. “I love the ambiguity,” the director says, “I hate spelling everything out to the audience.” After laying out what won’t be in the extended cut, Leone provides some hints about what will:

David Howard Thornton’s Art the Clown laughs to himself in Terrifier 3

“A lot of the stuff that’s missing are these really nice human moments with Sienna and the family. There’s a lot of great scenes with Sienna and Gabbie [Antonella Rose] that I had to cut out, and I appreciate. I didn’t have to; it really just made their bond so much stronger.

“I won’t spoil it, but there’s a great scene between Victoria and Gabbie in the finale. Really sadistic. But it was just padding out the finale too much, and I felt like we were going to start losing people.

“There’s another cool scene with Art and Victoria in the insane asylum that I had to cut out as well. There’s a handful of really cool scenes, so it is possible.”

Though aTerrifier 3extended cut could be on the horizon, Leone reveals that he’s also considering saving the scenes and including them as flashbacks in the next installment:

“Now I’m also toying with the idea that maybe they could be cool inTerrifier 4if they’re a little bit of a flashback. I don’t want to just waste them in an extended cut. They could serve a different purpose. So I don’t know. I just have to see what makes sense. But there’s a very good chance that there’ll be an extended version down the line.”

What Terrifier 3’s Extended Cut Would Mean For The Film’s Story

The Extended Cut Wouldn’t Drastically Change The Movie

Terrifier 3’s theatrical cutis evidently proving popular with audiences. The movie currently enjoys a strong 75% critics' score onRotten Tomatoesand an even stronger 87% audience score. Like its predecessors,Terrifier 3has been praised for its gruesome kills and moments of extreme gore, which earned the film its unrated designation. The film also delves deeper into the franchise’s lore, offering up more clues about Art’s origins and exploring some more mythological elements.

Every Terrifier 3 Death, Ranked By Brutality & Gore

While none of Terrifier 3’s kills are particularly pleasant, the slasher sequel’s nastiest shocks are some of the year’s most brutal moments.

The extended cut seemingly wouldn’t drastically alter any of this or provide answers to questions the story raises. Instead, the extra scenes would instead strengthen some character moments. Sienna (Laura LaVera) has been a central figure in the franchise since the acclaimedTerrifier 2, andthe new scenes would seemingly give her some additional quiet moments that make her worth rooting for. The gory scenes, on the other hand, would seemingly just be a fun bonus for those who want even more violence, even though they may negatively affect the pacing of theTerrifier 3ending.

Our Take On A Terrifier 3 Extended Cut

Does The Horror Film Need A Longer Cut?

Generally, deleted scenes are deleted for a reason. BothTerrifier 2andTerrifier 3run more than two hours long, a considerable runtime for films of this nature. There’s an argument to be made that both films, despite their strengths, are already a little too long, and adding back in deleted scenes would further hurt their pacing in this regard.

That being said, there is clearly a large audience that loves the horror franchise, and there will surely be those who would enjoy delving further into the twisted world of Art the Clown and his many victims. Plus, the creation of an extended cut doesn’t mean that the trimmed-down theatrical cut won’t still be available. In addition to alikelyTerrifier 4, a futureTerrifier 3extended cut means there’s lots of Leone’s creation still on the horizon.
