WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Teacup episodes 1-4!

Peacock’s newStephen King-endorsed horror television seriesTeacuphas unfolded a mystery at breakneck speed, and introduced far more questions than answers by the end of episode 4. The basic premise of the show was established by theend ofTeacupepisode 2, while episodes 3 and 4 introduced some new players into the isolated farm setting, each with questionable intent. So farTeacuphas built tension with distrust and paranoia, both due to the invisible threat beyond the blue line and due to the pre-existing relationships between the neighbors trapped on the Chenoweth farm in Georgia.

Episodes 3 and 4 ofTeacupsaw Meryl and Nicholasbecome more familiar with the entity that inhabits Arlo’s mind, known as “Harbinger” due to his constant warnings. Harbinger might have introduced a way for everyone trapped on the Chenoweth farm to cross the blue line safely, but its dangerous parameters leave plenty of reason for doubt. Meanwhile, a task force officer named Lieutenant Olsen entered the farm from across the blue line. While he claims to be an ally, Maggie’s own misgivings and the warning from the masked man not to trust anybody cast doubt on his intentions.

Who And What Lieutenant Olsen Actually Is

The Mysterious Police Officer Revealed His True Nature At The End Of Episode 4

As the trapped residents of the Chenoweth farm do their best to unravel the mystery of the blue line, someone new drives up to the farm. The man identifies himself as Lieutenant Olsen, a Birmingham police officer who is at the farm on behalf of a task force that travels around and handles what he describes as “situations” like the one the Chenoweths and their neighbors find themselves in. Olsen is heavily armed and able to pass over the blue line with no protection or mask, and as Valeria notes, he doesn’t “look like a liar”, much to Maggie’s chagrin.

“This Is Nowhere: Part 2”

Maggie is skeptical about Olsen, who makes it clear that he is searching for Arlo given that he came in contact with Mrs. Navarro in the woods. He also provides details about the force outside the blue line, which is a “concentrated vibration” that decimates complex organisms. While he claims to be there to help, Maggie is justifiably suspicious, and baits Olsen into the hay loft of their barn, confronts him and knocks him out. While he is tied up,Maggie and Valeria leave Ellen with Olsen’s gun to watch over him, and he tricks her into coming near him.

As she draws near, Olsen opens his mouth wide and something passes from Olsen to Ellen, just like what happened between Arlo and Mrs. Navarro in the woods. It’s implied that while the entity sharing Arlo’s mind, Harbinger, is benevolent, the entity that possessed Olsen and passed to Ellen Chenoweth is Assassin, the malevolent counterpart to Harbinger who is actively seeking to capture him as he passes from person to person.

What Arlo, Meryl, And Nicholas Discover In The Woods

According To Harbinger, It Could Be The Key To Their Survival

Harbinger/Arlo leads Meryl and Nicholas into the woods where they discover a strange crater surrounded by dead animals. It’s there thatHarbinger reveals his origin: he came from space, and is, in theory, an alien. That would explain his seemingly supernatural abilities, and why he speaks in disjointed English words–they are the only words he has learned to effectively communicate his point. At the crater, the trio finds a puddle of strange rainbow-colored liquid, which Harbinger insists they put in a jar to take with them.

McNab is played by Rob Morgan, who is no newcomer to spooky television; he plays Officer Powell in Netflix’s iconic horror/sci-fi seriesStranger Things.

Harbinger reveals in episode 4 that they all need to drink the liquid in order to cross the blue line. However, he also notes that it is a type of poison, and drinking too much will also result in their death. The trio then encounters the masked man with the whiteboard, who requests the jar of liquid before crossing the line to take it himself. Nicholas stabs him in self-defense, and as Meryl attempts to stop the bleeding, his face and name are revealed. His name is McNab, andhe’s already familiar with Harbinger and is seeking to help him.

What Ruben And James Found On The Navarros' Farm

Both Men Are Seemingly Left In Real Danger

Ruben and James travel to the farm of the Chenoweths' nearby neighbors, the Navarros. At the farm, they find a bloodbath with all the members of the Navarro family dead via gruesome circumstances, although notably not in thesame brutal fashion as Claire Kelly, who crossed the blue line. As James investigates the house,he is pulled into the basement and captured by an unnamed man who wears a gas mask like McNab, who weighs whether to kill James right then and there.

Teacupis based upon the 1988 novel Stinger by American novelist Robert R. McCammon, although series creator Ian McCulloch admits to changing a large portion of the novel for the show, making it more “inspired by” than a direct adaptation.

It’s clear thatTeacupis echoing, if not outright paying homage to the plot ofThe Thing, John Carpenter’s iconic 1982 sci-fi horror movie based on a 1938 novella by John W. Campbell, Jr. The two conflicting alien entities inTeacupare able to pass from person to person while maintaining that person’s appearance, sowing deep paranoia and distrust among an isolated group of acquaintances. That’s almost a direct copy of the plot ofThe Thing, in which a group of scientists isolated on an Antarctic base attempt to discern which of them has been replaced by an alien entity.

Finally, Ruben separates from James to investigate the Navarros' grain silo, which is surrounded by their three dogs who are barking at it. Inside, he discovers and is entranced by a glowing tree that radiates color and light. While no other information is given about the tree or its nature, its rainbow color indicates thatit could actually be the source of the rainbow liquid that Harbinger claims will keep everyone on the farm safefrom the dangers beyond the blue line.
