He praised Claire’s death scene and its choreography, and how it twined with the VFX to create a discomforting, upsetting moment for the audience. Check out what McCulloch had to say below:

Well, there are three things. One, it needed to shock the audience because in Teacup, we try to use the Jaws school of thinking that the less you see the monster, the better it is. So, the less you see horrific things, the more horrific things will affect the audience when they do happen, and this is one of those big moments. So, we want it to be something singular, something that people hadn’t seen before, and you’re also saying, “This is what happens when you cross the line.” It has to be so affecting for the characters that they will not cross that line, so it has to be something that is horrific.

On the other hand, I didn’t want it to just be a big explosion — you go over it, and you pop. It needed to be something, for lack of a better term, artful. The design, the way that bones work when you cross the line, the choreography, both the actress and our stunt coordinator did an amazing job, that even without the effects, it’s incredibly effective. So then when you add in those VFX, what you wanna do is heighten that. There were definitely different versions where it went too far or you’d laugh because it made you so uncomfortable. What you want is this kind of fine line in the middle where it’s so upsetting and final that you’re just left in awe, hopefully.

What Teacup’s Brutal Death Means For The Rest Of The Show

Even More Terrifying Deaths Are Likely To Come

By crossing the line, Claire offered a terrifying look into what could happen if anyone else on the ranch does so, meaning the characters who witnessed her death will need to inform everyone else right away. Given McCulloch’s description of horrifying events happening throughout the show, thecast ofTeacupstill aren’t safe from whatever threatening force is keeping them trapped on the ranch. However, it’s still not clear how the Gas Mask Man is able to exist outside without being killed, nor what this means for Arlo (Caleb Dolden), who appears to be possessed by something.

Teacup Interview: Creator Ian McCulloch On Changes From Horror Book, Building Out Mysteries & Future Seasons Ideas

Teacup creator Ian McCulloch talks his approach to adapting its horror novel source, why he made certain changes, and his thoughts on future seasons.

Since the first two episodes of the show are all that’s been released so far, anything could happen to the characters regarding the supernatural events now plaguing the ranch. This could include more answers about the woman in the woods and what killed her, alongside what the rest of the outside world is like if the ensemble cast isn’t allowed to go beyond their boundaries. While McCulloch previously expressed interest inTeacupseason 2, it seems more likely that answers will be provided as the first eight episodes get released.

Our Take On Teacup’s Visceral Death Sequence

It Might Be The First Of Many

Claire’s death inTeacupis just a warning about what will happen if any living creature crosses the line made by the Gas Mask Man. This means there’s liable to be other deaths as the show carries on, although it’s unclear what would possess members of the ranch to try and leave just yet. But, since they’re trapped for an indeterminate amount of time, this could influence them to try finding a way to escape, even if a strong opportunity hasn’t presented itself just yet.
