Though the Marvel Universe’s current Madame Web is the second iteration, Julia Carpenter, it looks like a version of Cassandra Webb is finally returning to the role. Cassandra was the first clairvoyant character to hold the mantle, debuting as the first Madame Web in 1980’sThe Amazing Spider-Man#210. Asone of Spider-Man’s strangest allies, Cassandra’s psychic abilities, telepathy, and astral projection powers made her a powerful associate to Peter Parker and the other heroes of the Spider-Verse before she ultimately died in Marvel’s Earth-616 continuity.

Led by the evil Madame Web, the Sinister Squadron is a terrifying group of multiversal villainsfor the Spider-Society to contend with. Villains on their side include a Gwen Stacy version of Green Goblin, a female Doc Ock like the one fromSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a spider-powered Kraven the Hunter, and many more formidable foes. The Kraven variant named Hunter-Spider was initially thought to be on the side of the spider-heroes, but betrayed them at the end ofSpider-Society#1, leading them into a trap created for the Sinister Squadron to attack them yet again.
With Madame Web’s profile being raised in general pop culture in a way that’s been slightly detrimental to her character, Marvel is now revamping her as a powerful threat.

Revitalizing The Character On The Page After Mixed Results On Screen
Intense backlash towards the character of Madame Web might be the reason for the character to make a grand transformation into leader of the Sinister Squadron.
If this version of the Spider-Verse psychic leading the Sinister Squadron is indeed an alternate universe Cassandra Webb, there could be some fun meta commentary on the critical andfinancial disaster of 2024’sMadame Web. Though the movie has garnered a cult fanbase for its hilarious camp qualities, the Dakota Johnson-led film was a bit of a bomb and was quickly eviscerated by fans of comics and film alike. The poor reaction to the character’s film could motivate her comics version’s descent into villainy, withWebb coming back with a vengeance to wipe out all spider-heroes and their loved ones.
The newSpider-Societyseries takes cues from many of Sony’s films, from the so-bad-its-goodMadame Webto the two truly belovedSpider-Verseanimated films, with many of the same characters. Intense backlash towards the character of Madame Web might be the reason for the character to make a grand transformation into leader of the Sinister Squadron and viciously taking on the more appreciated Spider-Verse cast. In the world of heroes likeSpider-Man, the fabric of their lore is threatened by a powerful all-knowing threat as two versions ofMadame Webface off in a battle for life and destiny.
