Warning: SPOILERS for Solo Leveling beyond the anime

While Song Jinwoo dominates theSolo Levelinglandscape, the Shadow Monarch is far from the only top Hunter or interesting character in the series. Indeed, the story contains a vibrant tapestry of complex characters, each with their own unique tales, desires, and motivations. By dedicating all their attention to Jinwoo, fans may unintentionally miss out on the fascinating arcs and drives of other characters, which play a crucial role in advancing the plot.

Episode 12 Solo leveling Jinwoo holding daggers

One of the morecompelling characters often overshadowed by Jinwoo’s dominanceis his fellow Hunter and future wife,Cha Hae-In. In many ways, she is Jinwoo’s complete opposite. Before becoming a Hunter, Hae-In was a top-level athlete whose promising career was derailed by a debilitating ankle injury. However, she successfully transferred the unbreakable discipline, resilience, mental toughness, and focus commonly found in athletes to her new profession. This enabled her to excel as South Korea’s only female S-Ranked Hunter and establish herself asone of the greatest S-Rank Huntersof all time.

Cha Hae-In’s Smell Ability Is Unique Among Hunters

Cha Hae-In Was the Epitome of a Hunter’s Hunter

Beyond her exceptional physical prowess, mental acuity, and technical expertise, Cha Hae-In possesses several unique abilities that distinguish her from other Hunters. Chief among these is an extraordinary adaptation of a fundamental human sense – one available to everyone, yet elevated to remarkable heights following her Awakening. This exceptional ability is none other thanher sense of smell. Indeed, her Awakening amplified this sense, allowing her to perceive the “mana”, the power source that enables hunters and monsters to wield magic and exhibit superhuman abilities.

On its own, this ability serves as a warning system, enabling users to identify nearby Hunters or Monsters. However, when combined with Hae-In’s powers, abilities, and experience, it evolves into a personal “spider-sense” that allows her to pinpoint individuals with mana in a crowd or on the battlefield. In combat, this ability proves invaluable, granting Hae-In real-time situational awareness of friend and foe locations. Paired with her exceptional speed and power, this skill provides an overwhelming advantage, enabling her to navigate battles with unparalleled precision.

Solo Leveling ARISE Cha Hae-In

Solo Leveling Shares First Look at Season 2 With Impressive New Trailer

Fans of Solo Leveling were just given a massive gift with an incredible trailer for the second season that shows it might even outdo the first season.

Beyond its role in combat, Hae-In’s heightened sense of smell played a crucial part in her connection with Jinwoo. Having relied on this sense to defeat opponents and even save her life, she trusted it implicitly. So, when she encountereda powered-up Jinwoo masking his true strength, something felt amiss. Her experience dictated that someone with his apparent skill should have an overwhelmingly potent mana scent. Instead, he had no discernible odor. This circumstance meant that either Hae-In’s sense of smell had failed her - something she knew was not possible - orJinwoo was hiding his true nature.

Cha Hae-In Deserved More Focus In Solo Leveling

AlthoughSolo Levelingboasts a diverse cast of compelling characters beyond Sung Jinwoo,Cha Hae-In arguably deserves more recognition. While her eventual marriage to Jinwoo and the birth of their son,Sung Su Ho- a powerful hunter in his own right - contribute to her appeal, her captivating personal journey stands on its own. That is, Hae-In’s story is as compelling as Jinwoo’s. To be sure, Hae-In’s story offers a compelling opportunity for the creators to explore her character further, warranting a dedicated spin-off or continuation.

As mentioned, Hae-In is one of the most powerful Hunters in the story. But unlike Jinwoo — who was chosen by the system to be its ambassador — or other Hunters who gained superpowers and abilities during their awakening, Hae-In’s rise to the top of the Hunter hierarchy is largely due to her hard work, meticulous attention to detail, and determination to put herself in the best position to succeed. In this way, she resembles classic comic book heroes like Batman, who maximize their abilities despite having powers that seem modest compared to others in their profession.

These are just a few aspects of Cha Hae-In’s character that were introduced but not fully explored in the story. They suggest that, beyond being one of the most powerful characters, she was also one of its most complex. A deeper dive into her life prior to becoming a Hunter, along with her training, battles, and personal struggles on the path to S-Rank, would offer fans valuable insight into her journey — especially after meeting Jinwoo. This added depth would allow fans to experience fresh new perspectives within theSolo Levelinguniverse - while helping expand that universe for further exploration.
