Nicely picking up the story threads from the previous special while also laying out new lore, the holiday special proves to be a great holdover until the show’s season 6 return.

Ahead of the special’s premiere,Screen Rantinterviewed stars Dan Stevens and Thomas Middleditch to discussThe Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October, how the former has adjusted to the fast-paced nature of the show’s dialogue, which holidays they’d like to see go to war in a future special, and their thoughts on a potential Monsterverse team-up.
Screen Rant: Dan, it is great to get to chat with you finally for this show, Thomas, always love seeing you and talking forSolar Opposites. The Halloween Special Part 2is such a blast from start to finish, a great continuation of the original. Dan, you didn’t get to be a part of the first Halloween special, so how did it feel to bring Korvo’s fear of Halloween to life this season?

Dan Stevens: Yeah, it was bonkers. I had to clue up on what had happened last time around. But yeah, it was great fun.
And then Thomas, for you, when you saw what was going to be happening this special with the return of The Great Pumpkin and the curse on the family, what was your first reaction to the script?

Thomas Middleditch: It was the GIF of Macaulay Culkin from Home Alone 2 going like this: [fist pumping]. Or the GIF of Jack Nicholson from — what’s the one with him and Helen Hunt — but there’s a GIF of him nodding, and he’s got a f—-ng psycho look in his face and nodding. [Laughs]
“…Korvo has got a lot that he wants to say very often.”
Dan, I’d like to turn to you next, because one thing I’ve always heard from talking with Thomas and Sean and Mary is that one note they always get is, “Faster, faster, faster,” when it comes to delivering their dialogue for this show. I’d love to hear what it’s been like for you growing accustomed to the pacing of this show, especially with something as bonkers asThe Halloween Special.
Dan Stevens: Yeah, it’s pretty high octane, and I’ve found that it helps if I go to the sessions heavily caffeinated and just ready to just hit the ground running very fast. Yeah, it’s great, I sort of follow their lead, really. They very much set the pace, set the tone, and Korvo has got a lot that he wants to say very often. He’s a man of many words, and you’ve just got to get ‘em out as fast as possible.

Terry Is “Always Quick To Celebrate The Monkey’s Paw”
Korvo Is Trying To Stop “Being Such A Humbug About Halloween”
I’d love to hear about your transformation into a ghost for this special, Thomas, and how Terry actually feels about it?
Thomas Middleditch: Well, with most things he sees, he probably starts out as, “This is great!” and then realizes it’s bad. [Laughs] He’s like, “Looks like the Solar-Opposites are ghosts, baby!” And then realizes it stinks, and he wants to be real, so he can bump mounds with his new husband. I just love that he’s always quick to celebrate the monkey’s paw situation.

So Dan, I know, obviously, Korvo is not necessarily happy about the curse — and I don’t want to give spoilers away — but it does become this very heartwarming, full-circle arc for him. What do you think is going through Korvo’s mind through so much of this adventure, this special?
Dan Stevens: Yeah, I think, as ever, he’s trying to fit into the human world. He’s decided that he hates Halloween, and part of his journey this time around is coming to terms with what makes Halloween great, and that’s what’s going to ultimately save him, and save them all, is getting his head around that, and not being such a humbug about Halloween. Which I think is a lovely, lovely journey, appreciating Heidi Klum’s costume party, for example, and not just doing down on it.

The Duo Have Some Wild Ideas For Future Holiday Wars
“It writes itself, obviously.”
Now, I love that, in addition to Korvo embracing it, we get to see one holiday going to war against another holiday. I’m sure there will be more holiday specials in the future. What two holidays would you love to see square off against one another in the future of this show?
Dan Stevens: Thomas has got the list of great American Holidays on his multiscreen station there.

Thomas Middleditch: This plebe is on his phone. [Laughs]
Dan Stevens: What am I going to do?

Thomas Middleditch: Well, okay, something fun that you could already play with is April Fool’s Day.
Dan Stevens: Oh, that’s good.
Thomas Middleditch: Soft pitch, you never know when the fools end. You never know when the goofs and the pranks end, and maybe there’s the goof monster, the spirit of April Fools. It writes itself, obviously. But then I’ve got Daylight Appreciation Day. I think we could really drill into that. I’m sure, if you close your eyes and just think of all the fun bits that we could mess around with Daylight. Or National Lobster Day. Does this sound like fertile grounds?
I think Lobster Day versus April Fools could definitely work out in someone’s favor.

Thomas Middleditch: There’s apparently a National Pets in Film Day.
Dan Stevens: Oh wow. Oh, that’s good. Just meeting famous pets, like Lassie.
But then the trick is on you, you think you’re meeting Lassie, and it’s just a dog.
Dan Stevens: A fake Lassie. Maybe they resurrect Lassie with sci-fi.
Thomas Middleditch: But then it’s like a Weekend at Bernie’s thing, so it’s a Weekend at Lassie’s, and they’re making this dead dog try to be believable next, and he gets a job, and now it’s the CEO, and they’re like, “What are we going to do? We’ve got this dead dog as the CEO of the company!” [Laughs] I’ll see you at the Emmys.
Dan, how about you? What are two holidays you would love to see go to war within the world ofSolars?
Dan Stevens: Well, there’s probably a National Donut Day. Can Thomas verify this on the list?
Thomas Middleditch: There is a National Donut Day. [Laughs]
Dan Stevens: And throw me another one, just randomly, Thomas.
Thomas Middleditch: There’s a lot of food-based ones. There’s also a National Fried Chicken Day.
Dan Stevens: There you go. Fried Chicken versus Donut, and then they fuse into a chicken-fried donut as the happy resolution.
Thomas Middleditch: It’s like, what’s that little monster man, Little Buddy? It’s like a chicken-fried donut freak monster, they combine. [Laughs]
The Duo “Absolutely Should” Have Their Characters Team Up In The Monsterverse
“Chicken fried donut, Monsterverse [crossover].”
So I did want to ask really quickly, before I let you guys go.You’re both in the Monsterverse. I would love to see you guys team up. Have you had any talks about the possibility of getting the team up within that world?
Dan Stevens: We should. We absolutely should.
Thomas Middleditch: We’ll get Legendary on the phone, and we’ll say, “Fine, we’ll do it.” [Laughs] They’ve been begging us to.f
Dan Stevens: Chicken fried donut, Monsterverse [crossover]. [Laughs]
Thomas Middleditch: This Kong, Godzilla, Galgaran or whatever, the Gomorrah beast-like thing is, can only be defeated by Chicken Fried Donut, helmed by these two donut pilots, Tin Tams and Din Dans. It’s like Pacific Rim, right? You need two Jaeger pilots to finally work together.
AboutThe Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October
Spooky stuff is afoot when the SPIRIT OF HALLOWEEN starts to take over Korvo’s life. “Solar Opposites” centers around a team of four aliens who are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome. Korvo (Dan Stevens) and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) only see the pollution, crass consumerism, and human frailty while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love TV, junk food and fun stuff. On season 5 of “Solar Opposites,” now that the alien mission partners Terry and Korvo are married, the whole Solar Opposites team are focused on family values.
