Creator ofCreature Commandosand DCU co-head James Gunn is shedding some light on characters that didn’t get a chance to be featured in the animated series' first season. The Max series entertained fans everywhere, but Gunn reveals he had to leave a few choice members out of the team’s debut to the DCU.

James Gunncelebrated Krypto in apost onThreads, which led to one fan responding with a question about how he decided on the lineup featured in Gunn’sCreature Commandosshow. Gunn responded saying that he strongly considered the classic Commandos' member Wolfpack, as well as one of his personal favorites, Man-Bat, but decided against them in favor of Weasel.

Gunn also admitted that Vincent Velcoro was nearly part of the show, buthe wanted someone from a different part of the DCU and went with Doctor Phosphorus. Solomon Grundy was nearly a member, but Gunn opted for Frankenstein instead.

Wolfpack, Man-Bat, and Solomon Grundy Aren’t Going to the DCU Anytime Soon

The Creature Commandos havebeen a part of the DCU since they first debuted inWeird War Talesback in 1980. Originally composed of Vincent Velcoro, Lucky, and Wolfpack (a vampire, a Frankenstein-like monster, and a werewolf, respectively), the team has grown and changed over the years, adding other monsters such as gorgons, zombies, and mummies. During the New 52,the team was overhauled to include characters like Frankenstein and the Bride. The team was largely absent in the last several years, thoughthe Creature Commandos did returnwith a new series around the time James Gunn’s animated series debuted.

It did seem a bit odd that Gunn chose not to use any of the original members of the Creature Commandos, but by Gunn’s account, he did at least consider some of them at one point. He also nearly gave fans the DCU’s take on Man-Bat and Solomon Grundy, but had to pass due to their similarities to Weasel and Frankenstein (the former Gunn has been developing sinceThe Suicide Squad). Though it seems like a missed opportunity not to use the Commandos' canon members, there’s always a chance Gunn could include them in the animated series' upcoming second season.

Even Man-Bat and Solomon Grundy Have a Chance for a DCU Appearance

While James Gunn’s plate is full at the moment, it’s been confirmed a second season forCreature Commandosis coming down the pipeline. And if Gunn considered characters like Velcoro or Wolfpack once before, chances are they’ll still be on his mind when he starts working on the team’s next adventure. It might take some time and obviously there’s no guarantee (especially since the team’s lineup isn’t that different by the end of season one). But for now, there’s hope that the DC characters that didn’t show up inCreature Commandos’first season could come back for the second.
