River’s Slow Horses Season 4 Storyline, Explained

River Is Protecting His Grandfather

River’s focus inSlow Horsesseason 4is connected to his grandfather David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), a retired MI5 officer who essentially raised River. The premiere episode, titled “Identity Theft”, is directed by Adam Randall and written by executive producer Will Smith. After an explosion that sets up the other main story of the season, the focus turns to River and Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar). The duo seems to be headed in a romantic direction.

Although they lightly flirt,River actually invites Louisa to tell her about his grandfather’s slipping memoryand seek advice on what he should do. She tells him that it’s his job to take care of his grandfather. In the next scene, audiences see that someone has entered David’s home. He claims to be River. The grandfather, given his mental state, can’t tell for sure. But he ultimately realizes it’s an intruder, whom he shoots.

What Really Happened To River Cartwright In Slow Horses Season 4

David soon realizes he made a grave mistake. Lowden isn’t seen for the rest of the episode. But by the end, with Lamb knowing the truth, after a visit with Standish (Saskia Reeves), it’s clear what happened:David mistakenly shot someone, though the identity is unclear. River then advises his grandfather to shoot the intruder in the face, to obscure his features, and buy just enough time for David to hide and for River to disappear. But, of course, given that Lowden is crucial to theSlow Horsescast, River isn’t staying gone for too long.
