WARNING: LIGHT SPOILERS FOR BORUTO: TWO BLUE VORTEX
An insightful interview withBorutoandNaruto’s authors has revealed that plans for the storyline have evolved, and the series' worst character is still alive because of it. Masashi Kishimoto’sNarutomanga concluded in 2014, and he took a few steps back to supervise theBorutosequel series, which is headed by his long-time assistant, Mikio Ikemoto. The two attended a special screening of the fantasticBorutomovie and participated in a Q&A that revealed thatthe two mangaka don’t always agree on which characters to kill off.
A lot of theBorutostoryline revolves around Naruto’s son and Konoha’s next generation of ninjas. For the most part, the story follows a shōnen formula with lots of exciting battles and interesting new characters that have expanded the beloved universe Kishimoto created. However, even after theBoruto: Two Blue Vortextime skip, some of the characters that should’ve been removed from the story a long time ago still remain.

The interview, translated and shared byXuserUzuRepo, asked Kishimoto and Ikemoto if producingBorutotogether had presented any challenges. While Kishimoto was subtle with his response, hinting that the two have had differing points of view towards the fates of specific characters, Ikemoto provided a more detailed response, “A serialization is like a living being. It constantly evolves. It needs to flexibly adapt. Little by little, the story develops in a direction that’s different from Kishimoto-sensei’s outline. Moreover, Code should’ve died a long time ago.”
The specialBorutomovie screening and Q&A withNaruto/Boruto’s creators took place in France.

Boruto’s Most Underwhelming Villain Has Lasted Longer Than Originally Planned
Without HIs Limiters, Code Is Said To Be Stronger Than Jigen, But That Has Not Been Shown
After reading more of the interview with Kishimoto and Ikemoto, it’s clear that small changes to the story later significantly impactedBoruto’s plotlines.Ikemoto’s changes led to the creation of android characters like Ada and Daemon and the sparing of the lives of charactersthat he said were more important than Code, but their names were not shared. Many of the changes led to the series transitioning from Part 1 ofBoruto’s more shonen-centered story intoBoruto: Two Blue Vortex’s more seinen-centric feel, a shift that many long-timeNarutofans have appreciated.
Code has played a prominent role inBoruto’s later arcs, but the one-dimensional villain has failed to be as frightening as his reputation hyped him up to be. Like Kawaki, Code was only a child when he was experimented on by Kara’s leading scientists. While fans have been told thatCode is more powerful than Kara’s former leader, Jigen, a foe who easily defeated Naruto and Sasuke, readers have consistently seen Code humiliated by other characters, making it difficult for the seemingly strong character to feel intimidating. But his importance to the story has prevented him from meeting his end.

Naruto & Boruto’s Story Accomplishes Something Dragon Ball’s Franchise Never Could
The Dragon Ball sequel series had great action for characters like Goku and Vegeta, but Naruto’s follow-up, Boruto, did a better job in one major way.
Without Code, Boruto’s Time Skip Would Be A Lot Different
Code’s Creations Have Cast Him Aside, But He Still Has A Role To Play
Boruto: Two Blue Vortexsuccessfully raised the intensity of the storyline when Code accidentally created an entirely new batch of villains that have already done a better job of intimidating the franchise’s characters and readers. Combining his powers with the chakra-absorbing God Tree spawned sentient creatures capable of causing mass destruction. If Code had been killed off earlier in the franchise, these new villains couldn’t have come into being. Even though Kishimoto wanted to kill off Code, Ikemoto still has a role for the character to play in the future ofBoruto: Two Blue Vortex’s story.
