That was no doubt the messageThe Rise of Skywalkerwas trying to communicate at the movie’s end, when Rey said that her last name is Skywalker as Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa smiled down upon her as Force ghosts. In fact, that moment was about as direct a seal of approval as possible.
Moreover,Star Warshas continued to refer to her as Rey Skywalker, suggesting that this will be reinforced in her newStar Warsmovie, rumored to be titledStar Wars: New Jedi Order. While it may have come as a surprise, particularly asThe Rise of Skywalkerwas meant to be the end of the Skywalker Saga, the franchise has been clear. Skywalker is canonically Rey’s last name, and that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon. However, her upcoming movie also suggests she will truly be the last Skywalker in the franchise.
Rey’s New Jedi Rules Will Forbid Her Continuing The Skywalker Line
The Jedi rule against attachments was introduced in theStar Warsprequel trilogy, and it became a defining aspect of the Jedi. However, given the rumored title of Rey’s new movie, it’s safe to assume she will be establishing a brand-new Jedi Order. While this inevitably means bringing back many of the original Jedi Order’s rules and practices, the newness of Rey’s Order and the at times flawed nature of the first Jedi Order—which in part led to its downfall—called into question whether Rey would uphold this rule.
Rey will not have any children, meaning that there will (presumably) be no one to carry on the Skywalker name.
Recently, though,Daisy Ridley has been clear that she expects Rey’s Jedi Order will also forbid attachments. After all, characters like Kanan Jarrus have made it clear that Jedi can have attachments and still be committed to the way of the Jedi and the light side of the Force. Nevertheless, given the likelihood that attachments will remain forbidden inStar Wars,Rey Skywalkerwill almost certainly be the last Skywalker in the franchise.
