Summary

Power Rangersreplaced three cast members in 1994, after which the franchise was never the same. In 2023, as part of the celebration of the show’s 30th anniversary,Power Rangersbrought back multipleMighty Morphinactors betweenOnce & AlwaysandCosmic Fury. This includes David Yost and Walter Emanuel Jones, the latter of which had not been on the show sinceMMPRseason 2. Once & Always combined Rangers from two generations and delivered some interactions I never thought I would see, such as Zack and Rocky or Zack and Adam.

The originalPower Rangersteam– Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Zack, Trini, and Tommy – fought together during most of season 1 afterthe Green Rangerjoined the good guys. Things changed a lot in season 2, though, with Tommy going from Green to White and the Rangers leaving the team. By the end ofMighty Morphin,Power Rangers’ lineup of heroes was quite different from when the show started. The exits of Jason, Zack, and Trini did not affectMighty Morphinonly– they also established an in-universe precedent that would be used time and time again.

10 Must-See Power Rangers Seasons Every Mighty Morphin Fan Should Watch

Catching up with Power Rangers is tricky, but some seasons are perfect for those primarily familiar with the 1990s phenomenon that was Mighty Morphin.

Power Rangers Replaced Jason, Zack, And Trini In “The Power Transfer”

The Original Red, Black, And Yellow Rangers Left The Team

Mighty Morphin Power Rangersseason 2, episodes 27-28, “The Power Transfer” bid farewell to Jason, Zack, and Trini. The original Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers were about to travel to Switzerland for the United Nations Peace Conference as Youth Ambassadors, meaning they would no longer be able to operate as Power Rangers in Angel Grove. The real reason why Jason, Zack, and Trini left the team is thatAustin St. John, Walter Emanuel Jones, and Thuy Trang had left the showover a contract dispute. Their last episode on the original show was “Opposites Attack.”

Tommy

Green Ranger/White Ranger

“The Power Transfer” had to use archive footage and body doublesso that the three characters could be written out of the show. I’m sure that a lot of kids who watched “The Power Transfer” in 1994 did not even notice that Jason, Trini, and Zack weren’t showing their faces for most of the episode. Given how iconic those three characters had already become, the fact that they never got a proper sendoff inMighty Morphinis quite disappointing in hindsight.Power Rangersfortunately handled Kimberly’s exit a lot better in season 3.

Tommy, now the White Ranger, became the leader of the Power Rangers in “The White Light, Part 2.”

Rocky, Aisha, and Adam stand together in the command center as Zordon talks to them in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

The Peace Conference storyline did not make a lot of sense either, but it was good enough for the show to justify why Zordon would have to find three new Rangers. In the BOOM! Studios comics, the Peace Conference was actually a liefabricated by the original Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers so that they could go on a secret mission led by the Blue Emissary. The trio were given new powers by the Blue Emissary and becamethe Omega Rangers– an elite, secret team of Rangers who operated mostly in outer space.

Power Rangers’ New Red, Black, And Yellow Rangers Were Worthy Replacements

Rocky, Adam, And Aisha Were Introduced In “The Ninja Encounter”

Before “The Power Transfer,”Power Rangershad introduced three new characters in “The Ninja Encounter” – Rocky, Adam, and Aisha. They would then be brought in as the new Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers after learning the identity of the Power Rangers. Having respected the Rangers’ secret identity and proven their bravery even without any powers, they were Zordon’s perfect replacement for Jason, Zack, and Trini. Introducing three new characters midway through season 2 could have been wrong, butthe Stone Canyon trio proved to be worthy replacementsfor original heroes and soon made a name for themselves on the show.

The previous Rangers were missed, but their replacements were great additions to the show.

Cassie, Carlos, TJ, Ashley, Justin, and Alpha in Power Rangers Turbo

The fact thatSteve Cardenas, Karen Ashley, and Johnny Yong Bosch starred inMighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movieshortly after they were cast on the show helped make the transition easier. As someone who grew up rewatching the 1995Power Rangersfilm on VHS just as much as the original show, the Stone Canyon trio felt as important to me as Jason, Zack, and Trini. These three new characters added a new dynamic to the show and even acted more like kids than their predecessors. The previous Rangers were missed, but their replacements were great additions to the show.

How The Exits Of Jason, Zack, And Trini Changed Power Rangers Forever

Power Rangerscould have simply recast Jason, Trini, and Zack, though it would most likely not have worked given how many episodes they had already been in. By choosing to introduce new characters who would then join thePower Rangers,Mighty Morphinset off a precedent that would impact the franchise for decades to come. Thirty years later, recasts remain extremely rare inPower Rangers.Power transfers, on the other hand, have since become very common. The arrival of Rocky, Zack, and Aisha meant that more than one character could use the same set of Ranger powers.

Power transfers can happen in many ways in the Power Rangers universe, from a magic sword to simply giving someone a morpher.

In season 3, following Amy Jo Johnson’s exit, Kat was brought in as the new Pink Ranger. The idea of power transfers was carried ontoZeo, whose first episode saw the Rangers gaining new powers, with some of the heroes taking on new colors. Likewise, the original Gold Ranger Trey of Triforia transferred his powers to Jason, whereasTurbochanged most of its cast midway through. Power transfers can happen in many ways in thePower Rangersuniverse, from a magic sword to simply giving someone a morpher. Either way, the Stone Canyon trio was the first of manyPower Rangersreplacements.

The Original Red & Black Rangers Eventually Returned To The Franchise

Jason Returned A Few Times; Zack Was In Once & Always

Austin St. John returned as Jason in the latter half ofPower RangersZeo. The Rangers needed to find someone trustable and worthy to become the new Gold Ranger, and Tommy knew just the right person.Jason’s return as the new Gold Ranger flipped his and Tommy’s dynamicfrom the original show. This time, Tommy was the Red Ranger, whereas Jason was the sixth Ranger. Jason also appeared inTurbo: A Power Rangers Movie, this time without any powers. The original Red Rangerwas one of the veteran Rangers who participated in “Forever Red” and also appeared in Beast Morphers.

The NetflixPower Rangersspecial brought back two of the first-generation Rangers – Billy and Zack – as well as Rocky, Kat, Adam, and Aisha. Its story was dedicated to the late Thuy Trang, with Trini’s daughter becoming the thirdMighty MorphinYellow Ranger after the death of her mother.Once & Alwayswas also dedicated to the late Jason David Frank. The original Power Rangers never reunited after “Opposites Attack,” but their legacy as a team lived on.
