WhileOne Pieceepisode #1118 wasn’t the best-looking episode of the season, the story content and some clever direction still did a great job of selling it and setting upepisode #1119and beyond. The Levely flashback continues to deliver on both action and lore reveals, and even with it coming to a close soon, there’s still plenty to look forward to.

One Pieceepisode #1118 picked up where episode #1117 left off with the Revolutionary Army attacking Mary Geoise and, more importantly, Cobra having his meeting with the Five Elders. Cobra’s storyline slowly but significantly expanded on various aspects of the lore that had been developing in recent years, and it all led up toOne Pieceepisode #1118 ending on a major moment for one of the biggest villains of the series.

What Happened In One Piece Episode #1118?

Produced By Toei Animation; Directed By Kenichi Takeshita

InOne Pieceepisode #1118, “The Holy Land in Tumult! Sai and Leo’s Full-Power Blow!,”Sabo and Bonney secured the keys for Kuma and the other slaves’ shackles, but they left freeing them up to Karasu. For Bonney, now that she knew her father would be safe, she left for Egghead to question Vegapunk, and for Sabo, he decided to investigate a mysterious location called the Lost Chamber after some guards made it sound like something he should look into.

At Pangea Castle, Saint Charlos followed through on his attempt to use Kuma to enslave Shirahoshi, with all the world leaders too afraid to go against a Celestial Dragon to help her. Fortunately, Sai and Leo didn’t have those reservations, both out of morality and due to being pirates, and as such,Sai and Leo saved Shirahoshi and hit Charlos so hard his body was nearly flattened into a pancake. Everyone panicked over the idea of a Celestial Dragon being killed, and amidst all that, Morley arrived and took Kuma back to the Revolutionaries.

While all of that was happening, Cobra met with the Five Elders to discuss Nefertari Lily, the Nefertari who helped found the World Government, but mysteriously disappeared before she could return to Alabasta. The Five Elders claimed to not know anything, so Cobra decided to move on to another topic: a letter Lily wrote before her disappearance that discussed, among other things, the Will of D. The Five Elders never had a chance to respond, however, because in a major twist,One Pieceepisode #1118ended with Imu appearing and sitting on the Empty Throne in front of Cobra.

How One Piece’s Anime Handled The Question Of Imu’s Gender

A big part of why episode #1118 received so much attention was because it would be the first time Imu would speak in the series, meaning there was a chance to finally reveal whether Imu was a man or a woman. However,One Pieceepisode #1118 avoided revealing Imu’s gender by leaving their voice actor uncredited, and their voice was put through a heavy filter, as well. What could be pieced together of their voice sounded rather androgynous, as well, so it’s still impossible to make a definitive statement on Imu’s gender.

As odd as it might be to go to such lengths to hide Imu’s gender, it makes sense that theOne Pieceanime would do that. Even with the most recent events of the manga, very little about Imu has been revealed, so the anime making a statement about their gender when the manga has yet to would be a major spoiler. Because of that,One Pieceepisode #1118 making it impossible to figure outImu’s genderthrough their voice actor helps maintain the ambiguity of their character, and overall, this was probably the best way to sell that idea.

One Piece Sells One Of Its Biggest Moments, Despite A Few Shortcomings

From a visual standpoint,One Pieceepisode #1118 wasn’t one of the anime’s best efforts. While there were plenty of good shots from start to finish, most notably when Sai and Leo attacked Saint Charlos, far too many scenes inOne Pieceepisode #1118 had poor pacing and lackluster artwork and direction. It was far from the anime’s worst episode, but it notably fell short of its most recent work and was somewhat hard to watch because of that.

That being said, episode #1118 did succeed in its biggest moment: Imu’s appearance in front of Cobra. The camera work and overall direction in Imu’s scene did a great job of dragging out Imu’s appearance to emphasize how menacing they’re supposed to be, as did the accompanying soundtrack, and it led toOne Pieceepisode #1118 perfectly selling Imu as a villain. This will surely to lead to even greater events intheOne Pieceanime, and they’ll hopefully have the direction they need to truly shine.
