Black Myth: Wukonghas a hidden fourth stance called the Wukong Stance that is incredibly powerful but has a long trek to acquire. The action RPG diverges from the norm by only including one weapon for players to use. However, this is supplemented bystaff upgrades/formsand Staff Stances that shake up gameplay. The former is unlocked by beating bosses to change the staff’s appearance while giving some bonus abilities and stats.
Black Myth: Wukong’s Staff Stancesare where the real differences will show, as Smash, Pillar, and Thrust all play differently. Smash focuses on high damage while having some counter mechanics. Pillar is the best choice for defense, while including broad heavy attacks for bosses or multitarget encounters. Thrust offers much of the damage of Smash but requires near-perfect positioning and timing to achieve. Overall, each staff excels at their role and can either be used the entire game or switched depending on the encounter.

The Wukong Stance isthe powerful fighting style used in the game’s opening tutorial and the final fight in Chapter 6. This stance has its own set of skills and animations that set it apart. The most notable is how the staff will extend to lengths that none of the other three can reach. Wukong Stance can achieve some of the highest damage in the action RPG and is recommended for use with theA Pluck of Many duplication spell.
The caveat to this power is that it can only be used for a minute at a timeoutside the tutorial and Chapter 6. To activate the Wukong Stance, the user must wear the Monkey King set, reach four Focus Points, and then use a heavy attack. This will extend the staff, perform the attack, and then switch the stance to Wukong.
How To Unlock The Wukong Stance
The Long Journey Home
Though not overly complicated, unlocking the Wukong Stance is a time-consuming endeavor. To do this,players must complete the game three times in a playthrough, meaning getting to NG+4, and having the True Ending each time. This allows for each perk of the relics to be unlocked. After that, the Wukong Stance will be unlocked for all further NG+ playthroughs.
The most annoying part of this is achieving the True Ending each time, as while it is beneficial for progression, it can be tedious. Toachieve the True Endingmeansdoing every secret area in the game, completing the Treasure Hunter quest in Chapter 3, beating the Stone Monkey and Great Sage’s Broken Shell twice, and beating Erlang Shen. However, this should get easier on successive playthroughs as the steps are well-known, and the player’s power has increased dramatically.
How To Use The Wukong Stance
A Stance Of Its Own
Though the Wukong Stance does not have its own skill tree, it has a variety of combos and different animations to help it feel unique. To start,the stance has five combos that can be usedbased on the number of enemies or positioning. The combos seem to take inspiration from the base stances and fluidly transition into each other if necessary.
The Wukong Stance also slightly modifies the staff spinby allowing the Destined One to throw the staff forward before it rebounds back. This attack is a great way to deal with ranged enemies and is likely to one-shot weaker foes. It even has its uses against stronger foes as a method to stagger them and close the distance.

The Destined One’s journey in Black Myth: Wukong sees him overcome plenty of trials, but the ultimate payoff for his adventures might be worth it.
Lastly, the stance has slightly different heavy attack animations based on how many Focus Points are consumed. However, the attack does more damage the more points are consumed, with the max attack also having an incredible range advantage. Given how short the duration of the stance is,the majority of the time the best option will be saving up for the four-point Heavy Attack.
How The Wukong Stance Could Be Improved
Rewarding The Effort Required
The glaring issue with the Wukong Stance is the limited time it can be used. Though those who can build Focus quickly can achieve it often, given the amount of time players go through to acquire it,it should have more uptime. The two best ways to fix this would either be making it a permanent stance with caveats or turning it into a Vessel.
The argument for making it a permanent stance is viable,since at the point of reaching NG+4, balancing the game seems unimportant. Once there, the Destined One is leveled enough to easily move through any bosses, so why not let players enjoy this broken stance as much as they want? If the developers wanted to balance it in a way, making certain stats get capped would feel like a fair trade-off.
The other way of improving the Wukong Stance is making it a Vessel that, upon use, would grant the Wukong Stance for an extended amount of time. A fair period for this would be three to five minutes. This makes the Wukong Stance easier to proc for all, it would have a cooldown, but allows for longer use.This method would make the Wukong Stance Vessel a great tool for bossesand even establish some kind of competition to see whether players can beat bosses in that time.
Overall, the Wukong Stance is a great, hidden secret in the title but held back by its limited use. It is understandable why this form needs some kind of balance, but it also seems redundant given the point where it can be unlocked. Even with its immense strength, the amount of time needed to unlock it just to use it semi-sparingly seems counterproductive. Regardless,Black Myth: Wukong’s Wukong Stance will remain the most powerful in the game, even if it’s hard to acquire and comes with limitations.
