Spoilers ahead for Uncanny X-Men #9!Marvel just dropped a bombshell and expanded its lore by subtlyrevealing that Ransom, one of the coolest new mutants from Rogue’s LouisianaX-Menteam, is related to the classic X-Men Icon, Sunspot. Out of all the young heroes Rogue has recruited to rebuild the X-Men, Ransom has one of the most tragic origin stories but this new revelation adds unforeseen depth to the superhero’s unexplored history.
InUncanny X-Men#9 – written by Gail Simone, with art by Andrei Bressan – Ransom tries to leave the X-Men by getting a ride from his cousin but is stopped by Wolverine who convinces the young hero to stay. When Ransom calls his cousin to change his mind, the caller ID on Ransom’s phone shows his cousin is Roberto Da Costa,the X-Men hero Sunspot.

Prior to joining the X-Men, Ransom tells Rogue and the team he had to survive on the streets, after his parents abandoned him, but his relation to Sunspot may allude to a new side of his story.

Before becoming a hero in training, Ransom was originally from a wealthy family in Buenos Aires, Argentina, however, he was kidnapped and his parents refused to pay the ransom which is where he got his name and why he escaped to live on his own. Similarly, Sunspot was introduced inMarvel Graphic Novel#4: “The New Mutants,” as an heir to a wealthy family from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, however unlike Ransom, Roberto inherited his family’s wealth.The two also share similar astral abilities, withRansom having a black hole for a heartand Sunspot able to channel cosmic radiation.
This family dynamic shows there is more to Ransom’s story, as it appears he couldn’t ask Sunspot for help while he was forced to fend for himself.

Despite their similarities as two Afro-Latino heroes from affluent families in neighboring countries,it’s quite bizarre that the two are related, especially when considering Ransom’s current hardships.Ransom has been on the run with the other mutant teens,escaping deadly threats like Sarah Gaunt, but it appears he has a close relationship with Roberto since he’s willing to call Ransom a driver.
