House of the Dragonstar Tom Glynn-Carney hints at King Aegon II Targaryen’s story in season 3. Despite ascending to the Iron Throne in season 1, season 2 proved to be a cruel twist of fate for Aegon, as his young son was murdered, and Aegon was burnt beyond recognition at the hands of his brother, Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) and his dragon Vhagar during the Battle at Rook’s Rest. I think he did for a while become a shell of himself, but I think now the way we see him in Episode 8, we see him quite cold and focused. There’s a fire in his eyes that I’ve certainly not seen that’ll lead us into Season 3. This new focused, cold version of the man who wants to exact revenge.

Other than a single visit in which Aemond taunted and threatened Aegon, even he has seemingly forgotten about his brother, confident that Aegon will never be well enough to resume ruling again. Larys is one of the few who has not forgotten Aegon and realizes that he can one day resume his mantle by waiting out the worst part of the war and returning to the conflict at the opportune moment.While Aemond, Rhaenyra, and their respective dragons and armies destroy each other, Aegon grows stronger, and awaits a triumphant return.

A great deal still needs to happen before that is viable for Aegon and for Westeros, but Larys has already put the plan in motion, and Aegon’s final season 2 scene and Glynn-Carney’s season 3 tease bode well for Aegon’s resurgence.Considering Aegon as good as dead may prove to be a mistake for Aemond, Rhaenyra, and many others, as Aegon seeks revenge against those who wronged him.
