Summary
Matthew McConaughey delivered one of the most underrated performances of his career five years ago, and I’m much more hopeful he’ll reprise his captivating gangster role after one crucial update. The actor has had a phenomenal career with over three decades worth of acting experience and has even earned a Best Acting Oscar for his role inDallas Buyers Club. Alongside his accolades and incredible performances,Matthew McConaughey has provided some movie moments I’ll never forget, making him one of the all-time greats. However, despite his achievements, I was worried he wouldn’t return to play one of his best characters.
In 2019, McConaughey starred in Guy Ritchie’s British gangster film,The Gentleman. The actor played Michael Pearson, a rich aristocrat looking to sell his cannabis empire, and his involvement helped the movie make $115 million at the box office. The Gentlemanmovie’s castwas stacked with big names, as Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, and Hugh Grant all played major parts, highlighting why the project was so popular. Sadly, with no sequel in sight, the chances of McConaughey returning to the franchise seemed low, but one major bit of news surrounding Ritchie’s gangster series makes me more optimistic.

The Gentlemen Season 2’s Confirmation Means Matthew McConaughey Can Still Reprise His Role As Pearson
Matthew McConaughey’s Movie Character Could Still Make An Appearance In The Gentleman TV Show
While there may not be anotherThe Gentlemenmovie on the cards, Guy Ritchie did make a TV series based in the same universe, and it has officially been greenlit for a second season. Although the show doesn’t feature anyone from the movie, it follows a similar premise, meaningthe return of Mickey Pearson isn’t out of the question. Despite Mickey being completely different from Eddie Halstead - the series' protagonist -The Gentlemanmovie and show have a lot in common, which leaves the door open to McConaughey’s return, especially since season 2 has to be even bigger.
McConaughey may be more familiar with the big screen, but there’s no reason he can’t at least make a small cameo in the Netflix show.

It made sense for the show’s debut to focus on the new characters and establish their story, but I’d love to see some sort of crossover now that it’s continuing. The Gentlemen’s cinematic outing had plenty of great characters who I’d love to see feature, but Mickey Pearson’s appearance is the most fitting given he has experience running a cannabis empire. McConaughey may be more familiar with the big screen, but there’s no reason he can’t at least make a small cameo in the Netflix show, and with season 2 officially happening, I’m desperate to see him return.

Although Netflix’s The Gentlemen adopts its own standalone narrative, it features some subtle callbacks and nods to the original Guy Ritchie movie.
How A Matthew McConaughey Cameo Could Work In The Gentlemen Season 2
Pearson’s Appearance Could Help Link The Movie & TV Show Together
The chances of Matthew McConaughey appearing inThe Gentlemenseason 2 are still fairly slim, but I think a brief cameo would help tie the franchise together. With the show taking place in the same universe, it’s nearly impossible to tell whether it is set before, after, or in a completely different timeline than the movie. While this isn’t a huge problem given the two projects aren’t linked together, it still leaves confusion for fans of both. However, having Mickey show up as a potential mentor, client, or investor in Eddie’s organization could help add clarity to the overall story.
Filming forThe Gentlemenseason 2 is expected to take place in 2025.

Although it could be fun seeing McConaughey have a more permanent role in the series - especially as it would make way for more character returns - his appearance would be best suited to a brief interaction with the protagonist. It would also be great to see Mickey cross paths withGiancarlo Esposito’s villain inThe Gentlemen, as their personality clash would be pure entertainment.Given Mickey was still alive when we last saw him, it feels easy to bring him back to this gangster world, even in a small capacity, and I hopeThe Gentlemendoesn’t waste this opportunity.
