Warning: Spoilers for My Hero Academia: You’re Next

My Hero Academia: You’re Nextfeatured a solid romance subplot surrounding its original characters Giulio and Anna, but even their climactic moment at the end of the film couldn’t top one scene from the film’s middle in the heartbreak department. That scene, of course, had to do with Shoto Todoroki and his relationship with his family.

In the film’s climax, Giulio attempts to stop Anna’s Quirk from raging out of control, even though he’s now unable to use his own Quirk after losing his right hand. Giulio climbs a mass of thorny vines in a last-ditch attempt to get closer to Anna, and out of sheer desperation, winds up touching her with his left hand in the hopes that something might happen. Surprisingly, something does happen, as Giulio is revealed to be compatible with Anna’s Quirk, and has his own Quirk empowered, such that it can now deactivate the Quirk factors of those he touches permanently.

Anna and Giulio’s reunion is certainly emotional, but it doesn’t hold a candle to one scene in the middle of the film, at least for long-time fans, and especially those familiar with the manga’s ending. Asthe students of Class 1-Astumble upon a courtyard where the villainous Deborah Gorrini had used her Day Dream Quirk, empowered by Anna’s, to entrance a large group of civilians into touching Anna in an attempt to find out if they were compatible. When Class 1-A tries to intervene, Deborah puts all of them to sleep as well, giving them pleasant day dreams.

In Shoto Todoroki’s daydream, he’s shown as a child again, without the scar over his eye. He’s invited to play by his older siblings, including Toya, who is alive and also unscarred. Shoto is thrilled at the opportunity to play with his siblings, something he was denied in his real youth due to Endeavor’s intense training for him. Endeavor and his mother are shown happily watching the children play in the yard, and Shoto even mutters something about eating soba noodles.

My Hero Academia: You’re Next Review: A Stellar Final Movie To Complement The End Of The Manga

My Hero Academia: You’re Next is finally in theaters, and overall, the film is a fantastic addition to the franchise that any fan should see.

While several of the students' dreams have a sad element to them,Todoroki’s is by far the most heartbreaking due to the sheer amount of trauma his family has been shown to suffer over the course of the series. Of course Todoroki, if shown what he truly desired, would see himself and his siblings as children again, able to get along like normal kids and play freely, without worrying about training or their parents' emotional states. All Shoto has ever really wanted is to have an ordinary life and to be allowed to associate freely with his siblings–even Toya, who we now know as Dabi.

Warning: Spoilers for My Hero Academia’s manga ending ahead

In the manga’s final chapters, which haven’t been adapted in the anime’s most recent season,Dabi is revealed to have survived the final battle, albeit he’s little more than a burned out husk who will never be able to live a normal life. The Todoroki family pays Dabi/Toya a visit in his recovery tank, and Shoto emphasizes that he would really like to learn more about his big brother, even in spite of all the terrible things he’s done. Having previously mentioned that he didn’t even know what Toya’s favorite food was,Dabi finally tells Shoto as the family begins to leave: he loves soba noodles, to which Shoto agrees.

Toya is struck with regret for his actions that have led him to this state, perhaps finally realizing that he will never be able to sit down and have a simple bowl of soba with his younger brother now. Toya apologizes to Shoto, acknowledging that it was never his brother’s fault, but only after the family has already left. It’s a tragic scene, with Toya’s life being artificially continued and only allowed a few minutes of speaking with his family a day.

The film’s mention of soba seems like a clear reference to this scene, which would’ve only come out a few weeks before the movie’s release, foreshadowing that Shoto and his brother, whom he wants nothing more than to get to know and get along with, already share something in common. Knowing this, theMy Hero Academia: You’re Nextscene hits even harder than it does already, ensuring that it’s without a doubt the most heartbreaking moment in the film.
