Episode #5 didn’t do much to expand on the cast, both in terms of characterization and pure numbers, but it fully played into its strengths and continued to show off what’s made the anime so fun to watch.
As with previous episodes,My Deer Friend Nokotanepisode #5 was split into multiple segments;the first two segments ofMy Deer Friend Nokotanepisode #5 were more stories focused on the comedy of Nokotan and Koshitan’s dynamic, but the third segment put Nekoyamada back in the spotlight as she tried and failed to take down Koshitan and the Deer Club.

Episode #5 did a great job of playing into the surreal nature of the series, and episode #6 will surely be an even greater follow-up to that.

What Happened In My Deer Friend Nokotan Episode #5?
Produced By Studio Deen; Directed By Naoki Horiuchi
My Deer Friend Nokotanepisode #5, “Dig Up the Dirt!!,” opened with Koshitan being challenged by three delinquents to fight for the title of the toughest delinquent in Hino, and the three of them quickly overwhelmed Koshitan thanks to their use of weaponry. Nokotan tried to help by giving Koshitan one of her antlers, and much to Koshitan’s surprise,Nokotan’s antler created a massive explosion that destroyed the school and blew everyone away. Miraculously, though, everyone was shown to be completely fine afterward, with Koshitan even saying how good it was that they were just a brain-dead comedy anime.
In the second segment, Koshitan decided to spy on Nokotan after school to see if she had any weaknesses she could exploit. That led to Koshitan learning that Nokotan had a job as a deer in the zoo’s deer exhibit, and to Koshitan’s befuddlement, none of the zoo’s patrons found anything weird about her appearance and ability to talk. Eventually, Koshitan was found out and was talked into getting boba tea with Nokotan, and while the two parted on a good note, the narrator noted thatKoshitan completely forgot about tailing Nokotan to uncover her weaknesses.

In the final segment, Nekoyamada infiltrated the Deer Club under the guise of joining on a trial basis to try and discover a way to take it down. While there, though, Nekoyamada got completely wrapped up in the antics of the Deer Club, with her letting Nokotan give her the deer-centric name “Shikayamada” and gleefully taking Nokotan’s antlers as a sign of her becoming a true deer. Nekoyamada went home feeling elated, but once again, Nekoyamada realized too late that she had forgotten to do anything about the Deer Club and had to be comforted by the narrator.
My Deer Friend Nokotan Finally Lets Koshitan Be More Than A Joke
From the start, Koshitan’s past as a delinquent amounted to little more than a rough vocabulary and some jokes at her expense, but in the first segment of the episode,My Deer Friend Nokotanepisode #5 did a good job of doing something different with Koshitan’s history of being a delinquent, with Koshitan getting a good showing in her fight and her character rarely being the butt of the joke before Nokotan’s antler released a massive explosion. It was a rare moment ofMy Deer Friend Nokotanplaying something completely straight, and that angle was great to see.
My Deer Friend Nokotan Continues To Be Summer 2024’s Best Comedy
My Deer Friend Nokotanepisode #5 didn’t push the series forward as much as previous episodes, but it was a fun episode, nonetheless. As always, the surreal nature ofMy Deer Friend Nokotancontinues to allow for surreal and otherwise great comedy, with the way everyone plays off each other and the constant fourth wall breaks always allowing for great jokes from start to finish. The show has carved out a comfortable formula for itself, and overall, it continues to work to great success.
The animation for episode #5 was also plenty worth praising. My Deer Friend Nokotancontinues to showcase plenty of inventive and fluid animation to enhance its comedy, the scenes parodyingRamboandNausicaä of the Valley of the Windbeing particularly great highlights of how good the series can look. Almost halfway into its run, theMy Deer Friend Nokotananime hasn’t lost its step in the slightest, and that’s unlikely to change for episode #6 and beyond.
