There are few superheroes who have thrown themselves into as many brutal situations asMoon Knight– and the latest issue of Marvel’sFist of Khonshuseries reveals the toll that has taken on the hero, by highlighting the fact that his patron deity might bring him back from the dead, but he brings him back damaged.
First shared by AIPT, the preview forMoon Knight: Fist of Khonshu#5 – written by Jed Mackay, with art by Devmalya Pramanik – reveals the tragic reason that Moon Knight’s scars never heal. Moon Knight is shown getting ready to step into the right and fight against the current biggest drug dealer in New York.
As he gets undressed for the battle,he looks over each and every scar that he has accumulated over the years, and questions why Khonshu never fully healed his body after his many resurrections.

The response Marc Spector receives from Khonshu is as brutal as one would expect from the mad god.Khonshu specifically does not regenerate Moon Knight’sscars, as each one represents a failure. “Every scar is a lesson,” Khonshu explains, and they are a constant reminder to Moon Knight that he has to learn from his defeats, in order to truly serve as the Fist of Khonshu. Because of this,Khonshu may resurrect Moon Knight, but he’ll never give Moon Knight a fully new and fresh body, or heal him entirely.

Moon Knight has an incredibly complicated relationship with his secret identities, so it’s no surprise that he has even more than most fans know.
There are a lot of self-destructive heroes in comics, people who consistently put the well-being of others over their own. Yet few have been asdestructive and violent as Moon Knight. Taskmaster described it best when he compared Moon Knight to a bullet. He’s perfectly happy to go through someone, completely destroying them as well as destroying himself in the process. This willingness to throw himself into harm’s way has made Moon Knight an undeniable hero, but it’s also gotten him badly wounded and even killed several times.
Marc Spector Carries Every Failure With Him – But Not By Choice
Khonshu Won’t Let Moon Knight Forget
Khonshu isn’t a loving God. He demands almost complete subservience from his priests. While he’s been willing toresurrect Marc Spector in the past, it’s never without a drawback. Not only is Marc made a little bit more damaged each time he resurrects,but Khonshu wants Marc to be aware of his failures.Every bullet he didn’t dodge, every blade he couldn’t avoid. Khonshu wants Marc to learn from these injuries so that he can finally become Khonshu’s perfect apostle on Earth. It’s a brutal reason, but one that makes perfect sense for a God who drives his priests insane.
While Khonshu has the power to erase his servant’s scars, he wants Marc Spector to remember that he will only be allowed to live as Moon Knight.
Getting scars isn’t unusual for superheroes. When Batman takes his shirt off, DC almost always makes sure that his scars are shown front and center. When someone is constantly putting themselves in danger to save innocent people, they’re bound to get a few scars. However, Marc Spector has died several times, and he’s come back to life each time. He has scars from attacks that ended his life, and while Khonshu has the power to erase his servant’s scars, hewants Marc Spector to rememberthat he will only be allowed to live asMoon Knight.
