One of the crucial moments in theSuperman & Loisseries finale sees Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl come back in a cleverDCedit. After 23 years, the DC era on The CWhas come to an end, asSuperman & Loisseason 4, episode 10marked the final show in the overarching Arrowverse franchise. While the final episode ofSuperman & Loisbrought a lot of things full circle, many fans would have loved to see an Arrowverse cameo or two, especially from the Super Family.
Graphic designer and YouTube editorJulian Bellshared a special edit on his Instagram of the big moment in theSuperman & Loisseries finale, where Tyler Hoechlin’s Man of Steel is seen flying with both Superboys, Steel, and Starlight during the flash-forward. However, in Bell’s version,Benoist’s version of the Girl of Steel is also edited into the shot, allowing her to have the Arrowverse cameo that many would have enjoyed. Check it out below:

Benoist finished her time as Kara Zor-El duringSupergirlseason 6, which wrapped its run in November 2021 and marked her last appearance in the Arrowverse. However, Elizabeth Tulloch, who played Lois Lane onSuperman & Lois, revealed in August 2022 thatBenoist was game to appear as Supergirlon their show.
What Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl Cameo Edit Means For Superman & Lois
WhileSuperman & Loisseason 2 ended with the big reveal that the show didn’t actually take place on Earth-Prime, but rather its own reality,The CW drama didn’t necessarily cut itself off from the Arrowverse as a whole. Given howtheSuperman & Loiscastheavily features many actors who appeared on the other Arrowverse shows, there is no reason why Benoist couldn’t have played Supergirl’s doppelgänger in this universe, even if it had only been for a brief number of episodes throughout those seasons.
Benoist’s Supergirl cameo intheSuperman & Loisfinaleedit showcases that the Arrowverse’s final spinoff show could have incorporated the character into its world. Given Clark’s ties to his Kryptonian heritage outside of his sons are extremely limited,Supergirl is always one of his most crucial family members, and exploring their dynamic could have held promise for the show. Whether or not the creative team ever did try to bring Benoist over for a cameo in any of the seasons is unknown at this point.

How Superman & Lois Used Another Arrowverse Cameo Approach Rather Than Bringing In Supergirl
Given how there were no other Arrowverse shows airing this year outside ofSuperman & Loisseason 4, having traditional crossovers likeCrisis on Infinite Earths,Elseworlds, andCrisis on Earth-X- among the many other events the DC TV franchise hosted - wasn’t as easy as before. However, even though Benoist didn’t get to be part of theSuperman & Loisseason 4 castas any version of Supergirl,The CW drama found a different way to pay a major nod to the Arrowverse with another beloved actor.
Before the final season had even started airing,The Flashstar Tom Cavanagh, who has also directed multipleSuperman & Loisepisodes in the previous seasons, had revealed that he would be making an appearance in season 4, but this time as a different character. While the Arrowverse audience had many theories on who he would be portraying in the final season,Cavanagh’s character was revealed inSuperman & Loisseason 4, episode 8, “Sharp Dressed Man,” to be Gordon Godfrey, who is the host ofGODFREY!,a news chat show where he held a debate between Lex Luthor and Lois Lane.

In the entire Arrowverse franchise, Tom Cavanagh has played more characters than any other actor, from multiple Harrison Wells doppelgängers to Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. Reverse-Flash.
Even though Godfrey may be a more obscure DC character, Cavanagh’s new role is actually bigger than some realize, as he is actually a New God, which is tied to Darkseid in the larger DC canon. Not long after, it was even revealed by the showrunners thatDarkseid was part of the abandoned plans forSuperman & Lois, had the DC TV show gone past season 4 on The CW.

Our Take On Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl Cameo Edit
Seeing Benoist’s Supergirl as part of the Super-Family in Bell’s edit underlines howSuperman & Loiscould have taken the opportunity to introduce a new version of Kara,as she could have easily been played by the Arrowverse veteran for a handful of episodes. This would have been another fun way to lean into the multiverse concept ofthe Arrowverse franchise, without having to disrupt any of the Earth-Prime continuity. But withSuperman & Loisofficially over, a new era of Kryptonians is on its way in James Gunn’s DC Universe, starting with David Corenswet’sSupermanmovie in 2025.
