ThroughoutSpawnmythos, there have beena number of variations of the classic Hellspawn, as many people throughout history have worn the symbiote suit in order to unwittingly grow the armies of hell - including Medieval Spawn. Medieval Spawn is a version of the character who is easily one of the most badass, yet shamefully underutilized. However, that is about to change withthe launch of a new Medieval Spawn series, which will reveal the Hellknight’s dark origin and hidden secrets.
Image Comics has released the cover and official description of the upcomingMedieval Spawnminiseries by writer Rory McConville and artist Marco Itri (with cover art by Francesco Mattina).

Before Medieval Spawn was torn from the past and stranded in his far future, he was a savage warrior battling across a cold and deadly landscape. He had made many enemies. Some would even follow him to the present day. This is a tale of Monsters, Wizards, and Hell Knights!
Series writerRory McConvillethen took to X to share their excitement about the new comic, once more showing the cover and teasing its storyline.

Based on the official summary and McConville’s X post, theMedieval Spawnminiseries will explore the character’s backstory in great detail, which will add much-needed layers to this virtually unexplored character. Until now, Medieval Spawn has been little more than a cool aesthetic, with only a few storylines that feature him in a starring role, and even fewer that dig into who he really is.
Who Is Medieval Spawn? Everything You Need to Know Going Into the New Miniseries
First Appearance:Spawn#9 / Latest Appearance:Spawn#348
Medieval Spawn’s introduction was decidedly unique when compared to the first appearances of other Spawn variants, as he actually wasn’t the star of his own debut. Medieval Spawn was merely used to introduce another character: Angela. Angela was an angel who hunted Hellspawn throughout history, and Medieval Spawn was the first ‘Spawn’ readers ever saw Angela take down - highlighting the threat she posed to Al Simmons in the present day.
While Medieval Spawn died mere panels after he was introduced, it wouldn’t be long before the Spawn Universe brought him back (indeed, he was way too cool-looking to be wasted like that). That came in the form of a flashback told from the perspective of the Violator, as the demon recalled how he helped shape Medieval Spawn into a worthy champion of hell inSpawn#14-15. That story offered a bit more insight into Medieval Spawn’s character/backstory, but there was still plenty to be explored.

Image Comics’ newMedieval Spawnminiseries is exactly what Spawn fans have been missing.
Medieval Spawn had one comic that featured him as the star -Medieval Spawn/Witchblade- but even that was a hard standalone with little impact on the wider Spawn mythos. Since then, Medieval Spawn has appeared periodically, usually as just one of many Spawn variants present in any given storyline (including stories that brought him to the present day). In other words, Image Comics’ newMedieval Spawnminiseries is exactly what Spawn fans have been missing.

What Questions will Medieval Spawn’s New Miniseries Answer About the Character?
Since very few Medieval Spawn stories focused on him as a character, the new miniseries has a chance to answer some lingering questions. Who was Medieval Spawn before becoming a Hellspawn? What happened to him in life that made him accept this dark destiny? What drives him to keep returning from the grave as both an ally and enemy to Al Simmons’ Spawn?
