Trigger Warning: This article contains discussions of miscarriage and infant loss.

Warning! Spoilers for Outlander season 7, episode 16 ahead!Master Raymond gave Claire a mysterious apology inOutlanderseason 7, episode 16, but it may not have been about what the show is implying. This character hasn’t been seen since back inOutlanderseason 2, which makes his return in season 7 all the more exciting. Claire saw Master Raymond in a dream while recovering from surgery, so it’s still uncertain whether the man really came to her bedside or not. To add even more to the mystery, he apologized for something, though he wouldn’t say exactly what for. All Master Raymond revealed was that Claire would soon understand.

Later inOutlanderseason 7, episode 16, Claire begins to suspect a connection between her stillborn daughter, Faith Fraser, and Jane and Fanny’s mother, Faith Pocock. Between Master Raymond’s mysterious appearance and Fanny singing a song from the 20th century,Claire came to the conclusion that Faith had actually lived. It’s implied that this is what Master Raymond was apologizing for. If he brought Faith back from the dead but didn’t return her to Jamie and Claire, he would certainly have a reason to be sorry. However,Outlanderseason 8could come with a much different reveal.

Master Raymond May Have Apologized For Misleading Claire About Faith

He May Only Want Claire To Think Faith Lived

Though Claire suspects that Faith lived inOutlanderseason 7’s finale, the Starz series has yet to confirm this is true. Master Raymond is a magically powerful healer who could feasibly revive a deceased infant, but it’s currently unclear what motive he would have to do so. It’s possible that, rather than apologizing for bringing Faith back but keeping her from Claire,Master Raymondwas telling the Madonna sorry for having to mislead her. It may be that, for whatever reason, he needs Claire to think that Faith lived even though she didn’t.

Why Master Raymond Would Want Claire To Think Faith Lived

Master Raymond Has A Greater Plan

Master Raymond is something of a puppet master inOutlander. The books reveal that he is a prehistoric time traveler—a likely ancestor of Claire, Geillis, and everyone else who can slip through the stones. He often guides time travelers, ensuring they are in the right place at the right time for his own purposes. If he has a greater plan, it is still currently unknown (in both theOutlanderTV show and books). However, whether Faith did or did not survive infancy,Claire coming to this conclusion inOutlanderseason 7 seems to be precisely as Master Raymond intended.

Every Time Traveler In Outlander Explained

There have been several time travelers featured in the Starz TV adaptation of Outlander. Here’s every time-traveling character in Outlander explained.

InOutlanderseason 2, Master Raymond tells Claire that they both have a powerful blue aura. Blue is the color of healing, he explained, and people with this aura have the ability to heal others. Claire has not yet mastered this power. However,if she believes that Master Raymond brought her daughter back from the dead, Claire is sure to begin digging into her own abilities. Perhaps this is precisely what Master Raymond wants. He might not have actually revived Faith, but he may wish for Claire to believe he did to motivate her to master her powers.

Could Claire Actually Be Right About Faith In Outlander Season 7?

Outlander Season 8 Surely Has More Surprises In Store

Of course, it’s also possible that Claire is completely right about Faith inOutlanderseason 7. If she is,season 8 will have to explain why Master Raymond, who has been such a friend to Claire, would keep her daughter from her. This inspires several other questions as well. Did Raymond himself raise Faith, or was she placed with another family? Faith was too little (and seemingly deceased) when Claire sang her the song “I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside,” so how could she have passed it on to her daughters, Jane and Fanny?

For now, there is a lot left to learn inOutlander, but Master Raymond is undoubtedly at the center of it all.

Outlander Season 7 Poster

Finally,Outlanderseason 8 will have to revealwhat became of Faith. Jane and Fanny’s mother died before the events ofOutlanderseason 7, though precisely how is never revealed. Did Claire discover that her daughter lived, only to be too late to ever actually meet her? This would be a rather tragic revelation. It’s possible that rather than dying, Faith Pocock simply traveled through time. She might be trapped somewhere, and Claire (or maybe Brianna) will have to retrieve her. For now, there is a lot left to learn inOutlander, but Master Raymond is undoubtedly at the center of it all.
