Summary

Brand-new footage fromThe Mandalorian & Grogushown at D23 this year revealed one familiar face that could unfortunately signal the continuation of a concerningStar Warstrend. The Mandalorian & Groguis perhaps the most anticipated project amongStar Wars’upcoming movies. This is in part because it will continue the story of one ofStar Wars’best TV shows,The Mandalorian. However, the movie also represents a massive update toStar Warsmovies and TV shows, as it will be the first TV show to transition to the big screen in the franchise.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t potential pitfalls toThe Mandalorian & Grogu, though—quite the contrary. Rather,The Mandalorian & Groguwill face a number of obstacles, particularly given the issuesStar Warshas had recently with backlash and controversies. Now, in light of new footage fromThe Mandalorian & Grogureleased at D23, it seems the movie could be repeating oneStar Warsproblem in particular that would not bode well for the movie.

Everything We Know About The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie

The Mandalorian’s story will continue with a Star Wars movie. Here’s everything we know about the project, including cast, release, and timeline.

The Mandalorian Movie Footage Already Reveals A Big Cameo

Although the video ofThe Mandalorian & Grogureleased at D23 has yet to become publicly available, the footage is confirmed to have shown an appearance by Garazeb ‘Zeb’ Orrelios fromStar Wars Rebels. Zeb was an incredibly belovedRebelscharacter and member of the Ghost crew. Although he was often a bit gruff and irritable, his outer grumpiness concealed a compassionate Rebel fighter who cared deeply about his fellow Ghost crew members. In fact, although he and Ezra Bridger were antagonistic toward one another, even they had a special bond.

Because of his importance to theRebelsteam, Zeb’s absence inAhsokawas notable and surprising, as Sabine Wren, Ezra, Hera Syndulla (and her son Jacen), and Chopper all returned to theStar Warsscreen inAhsokaseason 1. However,Zeb did have a very brief cameo inThe Mandalorian, bringing the character to live-action for the first time. While it’s possible that Zeb will join his former team inthe upcomingAhsokaseason 2, he is confirmed to be among the characters inThe Mandalorian & Grogu.

This Movie Should Focus On Its Titular Characters, Not Cameos

Although it’s exciting to see that a beloved character will be included inThe Mandalorian & Grogu, this could spell trouble for the movie. Specifically,Star Warshas faced backlash in recent projects because of a reliance upon popular characters' cameos and a lack of focus on titular characters. InStar Wars: The Rise of SkywalkerandThe Acolyte,Star Warsbrought back major characters Palpatine and Master Yoda (although inThe Acolyte, this cameo only came at the very end) rather than trusting brand-new stories. InObi-Wan Kenobi, Obi-Wan’s story was at times overshadowed by newcomers such as Reva.

Hopefully,Star Warsis learning from the mistakes of the past and will ensure thatThe Mandalorian & Groguis truly focused on Din Djarin and Grogu, as the title suggests. It is genuinely exciting that Zeb will be returning, but it would be best if this was the one major cameo in the movie beyond the main characters already established inThe Mandalorianera. The Mandalorian & Grogurepresents a thrilling addition toStar Wars, and, ideally, the movie will follow through on the promise of the title.
