Law & Order: SVUseason 26, episode 6, “Rorschach,” is inspired by a real-life case but provides a more optimistic ending than what happened in real life. In the episode, a traveling couple, Ellie and Chris, are discovered at their campsite, gravely injured. Ellie suffered severe head trauma, while Chris was stabbed with his pocket knife. The case falls into Olivia Benson’s hands because Ellie might have endured sexual assault. In this episode ofLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit, Olivia Benson and her teamlook for a suspect until evidence begins pointing in Chris' direction.

“Rorschach” ends up telling a story about an abusive relationship, where the victim, Ellie, will most likely die at the hands of her abuser, Chris. It is shocking, butLaw & Order: SVU’s Detective Kate Silvaseems to have initially suspected it was Chris. “Rorschach” is anotherLaw & Order: SVU episode based on real-life cases. Its story isa heartbreaking tragedy similar to the real-life case of Gabby Petito, who disappeared in August 2021, and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, quickly became the suspect. However, the show opts to take a surprisingly optimistic approach.

Ellie’s Abusive Boyfriend Is Caught & Punished For His Crime

Brian Laundrie Died By Suicide Before Authorities Could Get To Him

Of course, “Rorschach,” is only loosely based on Gabby Petito’s case. It primarily differs in the outcome of both the victim and their abuser. InLaw & Order: SVU, Ellie is found unconscious and after a day of operating, Ellie’s neurosurgeon believes she is braindead. Although “Rorschach” ends before knowing whether Ellie’s mother will pull the plug, likely, Ellie will never wake up.However, the narrative provides some hope by leaving it as a cliffhanger. In Gabby Petito’s case, that hope was dashed when authorities found her deceased body.

As for Chris, he is found alive, although nearly stabbed to death. He successfully makes it through surgery and lives, and as a result, he faces Olivia Benson and the justice system. In real life, Brian Laundrie escaped the FBI for over a month, going on the run before fatally shooting himself. By the time his body was discovered, Laundrie was already dead, spurring outrage that Laundrie would never face justice for what he did. By providing some closure in its loose retelling,Law & Order: SVUportrays a more hopeful fictionalized retelling where Ellie has a chance to live and Chris faces justice, unlike reality.

What Really Happened In Gabby Petito’s Case

Brian Laundrie Killed His Fiancée, Gabby Petito, In August 2021

Although Brian Laundrie was a suspect from the beginning, investigators could not confirm that he was responsible for Gabby Petito’s disappearance until they discovered Laundrie’s notebook. According toThe Boston Globe, authorities found Laundrie’s journal, where the suspect confesses to killing Petito, in a Floridian swamp. Until this point, it had only been widely presumed that Brian Laundrie was responsible for Petito’s murder. Furthermore, until investigators found Gabby Petito’s remains in Wyoming, it had also only been presumed that Laundrie had done something to her.

It is the ultimate tragedy in both real life and inLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit. Gabby Petito’s case is a critical reminder that many people still suffer abuse. According to theNational Domestic Violence Hotline, more than 12 million people are subjected to domestic violence in the United States per year. Ellie’s case inLaw & Order: Special Victims Unitis based on the tragedy of Gabby Petito, but they are not the only ones affected by violence.
