Summary
ThroughoutJujutsu Kaisen, the Heian era has been hailed as the pinnacle of sorcery. It is from this era that the King of Curses, Sukuna, originates. Alongside him are other powerful sorcerers, such as his retainer Uraume, his unwanted fan Yorozu, and Takako Uro, the commander of a whole army of sorcerers who once battled him to the death.Domain Expansions were commonand the flow of Cursed energy was immense. However, with Sukuna’s death and the passage of time, curses waned in power, and sorcerers did as well.
However, one Sorcerer pushed Jujutsu Society back to new levels in the modern era - that’s Satoru Gojo, the ‘strongest sorcerer of today.’ Wielding the Infinity technique and possessing the Six Eyes, Gojo can both use his immensely powerful technique at an incredibly efficient level, along with mastering many forms of Cursed Energy manipulation.

But it’s not just Gojo -plenty of the new generation has shown immense promise, both under Gojo’s tutelage and otherwise. The latest chapter ofJujutsu Kaisenproved itthanks to protagonist Yuji Itadori himself, who may have just cemented his status as an all-time greatest sorcerer.
35 Strongest Jujutsu Kaisen Characters, Ranked
While not everyone in Jujutsu Kaisen cursed energy, the strongest characters have dangerous techniques and high levels of cursed energy.
Sorcery in the time of Sukuna Was Impressive
What the King of Curses Contended With
To establish how the modern era’s sorcerers have surpassed the Heian era, it’s first important to see what some of the strongest of that era had to offer. From what we’ve seen, at least one of these is excellent techniques. Uraume’s Ice Formation, Yorozu’s Construction, and Uro’s Sky Manipulation are all amazing and flexible techniques. The latter two sorcerersalso possess Domain Expansions, which are said to have been more common in that era as well. Immense Curse Energy reserves are another thing Heian sorcerers possess, and all of them utilize their Cursed energy in rather efficient ways.
However, Sukuna puts them all to shame. Sukuna possesses a depth and understanding of Jujutsu that very few have, thanks to his undisputed reign in the Heian era. He has all the tools a sorcerer can ask for and more. Beyond his Jujutsu prowess, his four arms and eyes also give him a massive biological advantage, having near 360 degree vision and an extra set of hands to fight with. These reasons are why he was so feared in his heyday, and its possible there will never be a sorcerer like him ever again.

Gojo Leads the Modern Era
The Strongest Sorcerers of Today
In the modern era, the strongest sorcerer is indisputably Satoru Gojo. While he’s not the first to wield both the Limitless technique and the Six Eyes, he may be the most powerful among them. His presence alone is said to have increased Curse activity and power in the modern era, pushing it forward.Even Sukuna seemed to respect and fear his power, having spent a majority of the series trying to figure out a way to get around the Infinity technique. Ultimately, he relied on the Ten Shadows’s Mahoraga to circumvent the untouchable Gojo’s power - but even Mahoraga was no match for Gojo’s strength.
To say nothing of the students under Gojo. Megumi Fushiguro achieved an incomplete Domain Expansion at fifteen years old, allowing him to go toe to toe with immensely powerful sorcerers and curses. Nobara Kugisaki got off a black flash and defeated Special Grade Curses in her first few months of Sorcery. Kinji Hakari has access to limitless cursed energy through his domain expansion.Yuta Okkotsu possesses one of the most diverse skillsetof any sorcerer at only seventeen years old. Yuji stands among them as an incredibly gifted individual, not entirely dissimilar to Sukuna’s own biological advantages.

How the Modern Era was Pushed by Kenjaku
However, not all of this can be attributed to the modern generation simply being led by Gojo. Kenjaku had a significant hand in pushing modern sorcerers to the next level. Part of this was done through awakening techniques in those with the capacity for sorcery but not the proper brains to do so. Among these sorcerers was Hiromi Higurama, a defense attorney turned Culling Game participant. In addition to his strong innate technique,Higurama also managed to learn Reverse Curse Technique on the fly during battle, another shocking display of jujutsu skill in the modern era.
Kenjaku’s more pertinent meddling in the modern era, though, is Yuji - asKenjaku was also Yuji’s motherbefore he possessed the body of Suguru Geto. Being distantly related to the King of Curses through his father, and with access to sorcery through his mother, Kenjaku had always intended for Yuji to be powerful. Which he did live up to, as during the month of training before the climatic Shinjuku Showdown, he mastered skills that were essential in the battle against Sukuna. While Kenjaku may have made the path, it was up to Yuji to take it, and he certainly did.

How the Modern Era Surpassed the Heian Era
Where Today’s Sorcerers Pulled Ahead
So where did the sorcerers of today manage to get ahead of the Heian Era’s giants? Well, the answer is simple - they managed to defeat Sukuna. Gojo alone nearly defeated the King of Curses, having only lost becauseSukuna specifically went out of his way to gain a powerhe could defeat Gojo with. Even then, it was a very narrow loss, one that Gojo earned Sukuna’s respect for. It was then that the modern era sorcerers - and Kashimo, the one outlier - descended on Sukuna.
This fight cemented them as surpassing the Heian era, as even Sukuna’s name alone was enough to make Uro cower in fear. While some may argue that the damage sustained during Gojo’s fight paved the path to their victory, it was still a hard fought battle, as Sukuna assumed his Heian form after Kashimo’s initial assault. Despite the sheer power Sukuna displayed, every sorcerer in the Modern era gave it their all, from Todo’s triumphant return, and of course,Yuji using his Domain Expansion in an act that sealed Sukuna’s fate.

WithJujutsu Kaisenclose to its end, Gege Akutami has essentially declared the Modern era as the new great era of sorcery, guided by Gojo’s power and cemented by Yuji’s meteoric growth as a sorcerer. With Shinjuku Showdown approaching its climatic finale, perhaps what this new era will bring will be shown, for all its good and bad.
