The Chosen One prophecyandthe Mortis Godsare two of the biggest mysteries inStar Wars, but this theory perfectly connectsAnakin Skywalkerand the Mortis Gods, revealing how they are intertwined. The Mortis Gods were introduced inStar Wars: The Clone Warsas powerful Force beings. In fact, they may very well embody the Force itself, as the Son represents the dark side of the Force, the Daughter represents the light side, and the Father represents balance.

Although the Mortis Gods have been referenced a number of times inStar Warsmovies and TV shows, including inStar Wars Rebels, their significance was seriously diminished following thisClone Warsarc. That may be about to change, however, as they have recently resurfaced intheStar Warstimeline. IntheAhsokaseason 1 ending, Baylan Skoll was shown atop statues of the Mortis Gods, suggestingAhsokaseason 2 may have a direct tie-in to these gods—and it may reveal a major connection to Anakin Skywalker/the Chosen One.

Star Wars Has Never Really Explained What The Chosen One Prophecy Means

True “Balance” In The Force Has Yet To Be Defined

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menaceshocked viewers by introducing Anakin Skywalker in theStar Warsprequel trilogy not as a dark side Force-user or even a teenager teetering on the edge of the dark side but rather as an adorable and innocent young boy, enslaved on Tatooine beside his mother. All the more shocking,Anakin was revealed to be the Chosen One inThe Phantom Menace, which is precisely why Qui-Gon Jinn was so determined to free him from slavery, bring him to Coruscant, and have him trained in the Jedi Order.

The exact definition of the Chosen One was unclear.

Even inThe Phantom Menace, the exact definition of the Chosen One was unclear. Qui-Gon indicated that, as the Chosen One, Anakin would"bring balance to the Force,“but the meaning of ‘balance’ was left undefined. This issue has been repeated inStar Warssince. In Claudia Gray’s book,Master & Apprentice, the prophecy was finally directly stated. The book explains:

“A Chosen One shall come, born of no father, and through him will ultimate balance in the Force be restored.”

While this is at least illuminating in the sense that the actual prophecy has been revealed, the meaning of"ultimate balance in the Force"isn’t certain. It seems the Jedi also have their own definition—destroying the Sith—but that hasn’t been confirmed as the true definition anywhere inStar Warscanon.

Anakin’s Encounter With The Mortis Gods Was Clearly Tied To The Chosen One Prophecy

The Mortis Gods Seem To Represent Balance Themselves

AlthoughStar Warshas yet to fully define balance in the Force, the Mortis Gods may be the best and most objective representation of balance thus far. As mentioned, the Son represents the dark side, the sister represents the light, and the Father represents balance. While the Jedi’s definition of balance evidently involves destroying the Sith, thereby suppressing if not outright destroying the dark side, the Mortis Gods suggest that the dark side must exist for the Force to have balance, but it must be kept in check.

Arguably, this seems like a much more logical definition than the Jedi’s. ‘Balance’ does not suggest that the light side should be the only side of the Force to exist. This makes it all the more interesting that Anakin had this encounter with the Mortis Gods inThe Clone Wars. With the Jedi, Anakin was being told that he must destroy the Sith, but the Mortis Gods may have been showing him another way.

Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Ahsoka Tano all had their memories wiped when they left Mortis, unfortunately meaning Anakin likely did not retain these lessons.

Why Did The Father Want To Recruit Anakin?

The Father Wanted Anakin To Be His Replacement

All the more interesting, during the Mortis Gods arc inThe Clone Wars, the Father tried to recruit Anakin to take his place. The Daughter, the Son, and the Father all ended up dying by the end of this arc, raising questions about what this meant for the Force if this trio truly was keeping the Force in balance. No doubt because the Father shared these concerns, he had hoped Anakin would become his replacement. Had Anakin taken the place of the Father, he theoretically would have been fulfilling the Chosen One prophecy.

No, he wouldn’t have destroyed the Sith, but maybe that wasn’t true balance after all. It’s also notable that, in addition to being called the Mortis Gods, they were also referred to as the Ones. In the Father’s view,Anakin’s status as the Chosen One could have meant that he was chosen to join this family.

Was The Father Right About The Chosen One Prophecy?

The True Nature Of The Mortis Gods Must Be Revealed

Whether the Father was right about Anakin and the Chosen One prophecy really comes down to the Mortis Gods' true role inStar Wars, which has yet to be fully elucidated. The Mortis Gods may just be one of several groups of powerful Force-users, such asthe Nightsisters of Dathomir. In that case, it’s possible that the Father represents yet another being who had his own interpretation of ‘balance’ in the Force and the Chosen One prophecy and wanted to push Anakin into fitting that interpretation.

On the other hand,if the Mortis Gods did represent balance in the Force and embody the Force itself, the Father was right that Anakin should have taken his place. This also would have prevented Anakin from falling to the dark side, becoming Darth Vader, and carrying out Order 66. Anakin still brought balance in the end, at least based on the Jedi’s understanding of the prophecy, but becoming the replacement for the Father would have prevented plenty of suffering.Star Warsmay have more to say on this matter, though, and it could be coming inAhsokaseason 2.

Ahsoka Season 2: Story, Updates, Everything We Know

Ahsoka season 2 is confirmed and has received exciting new story and filming updates. Here’s everything we know about the Star Wars project.

Will Ahsoka Season 2 Reveal The True Nature Of The Chosen One?

Star Warsmay be introducing a major update to the Mortis Gods and to the Chosen One prophecy inAhsokaseason 2.Ahsokaseason 1 made several references to the Mortis Gods, most notably with Baylan Skoll standing on top of statues of the Mortis Gods in the season 1 finale. However, even by nature of the show being about Ahsoka Tano,Ahsokais perfectly positioned to follow up on the Mortis Gods' story.

InThe Clone Wars, Ahsoka was killed by the Son, but the Daughter was able to help Anakin transfer the last of her life force into Ahsoka, saving her life. Since that time, the Daughter’s convor, Morai, (which some have even theorized could be the Daughter herself) has followed Ahsoka, presumably protecting her. This explicit connection between Ahsoka and the Mortis Gods suggestsAhsokawould be the ideal show forStar Warsto further explore these beings.

Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and Baylan Skoll could represent the Father, the Daughter, and the Son, respectively.

The most exciting theory regarding this possibility is that Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and Baylan Skoll could represent the Father, the Daughter, and the Son, respectively. Anakin has already been asked to fill this role, and now that he is a Force ghost watching over Ahsoka on Peridea, this could absolutely be his future. Clearly, Ahsoka and the Daughter are directly connected, so this would suit her as well. Baylan Skoll, as a dark side Force-user on the hunt for the Mortis Gods, would also fit the bill for the Son.

At present, this remains a theory, but it’s certainly a compelling one.Star Warshas made it clear thatAhsokais going to be exploring the Mortis Gods once again. It could therefore be inAhsokaseason 2 thatStar Warsreveals the true connection betweenAnakin Skywalker’sChosen One prophecy and the Mortis Gods.
