AsThe Sims 4community reels from the revelation thata fifth mainline game isn’t a priorityfor EA,players may be even more disappointed to see early images of the long-awaited Project Rene. Announced several years ago, the now infamous Project Rene took on a larger meaning forSimsfans as most believed it to be the franchise’s next major step. Unfortunately, that no longer appears to be the case as the mysterious game reportedly underwent a shift in its development, resulting in a product that may not live up to the hype.

Over on X (formerly Twitter),LikeLifeSimshared a handful of screenshots of Project Rene and the game doesn’t look like what many expected.Fans have been quick to criticize its seemingly smaller scope, limited gameplay, weaker visuals, and what appear to be microtransaction options. While it’s currently unconfirmed what platforms Project Rene is intended for, the community now believes EA wants to ship it as a free-to-play mobile experience; the screenshots suggest this approach but nothing has been confirmed at the time of writing.

Project Rene Was The Next Major Step

This Doesn’t Look Like An Improvement

As with all leaks, it’s worth taking the screenshots with a grain of salt until Maxis or EA releases official imagery;it could be the case that Project Rene has undergone some major changes since the pictures were snapped. Having said that, if they are genuine, fans won’t be pleased withThe Sims’direction. Following confirmation that Maxis has no intention to developThe Sims 5, many are questioning the developer’s intentions for the series given how many yearsThe Sims 4has been running with subsequent expansions.

Project Rene was previously framed as the advancement of the series that would elevateThe Sims 4’s gameplay higher. Unfortunately, the supposedly leaked images paint a picture of a game that looks more like a downgrade in terms of customization, mechanics, and accessibility. While it may offer multiplayer options for those who want to play with friends, that feature by itself isn’t enough to carry an experience that was, for several years, believed to beThe Sims 5.

What Does This Mean For The Sims?

Even More Expansions For The Sims 4

As fans express theirfrustration at Project Rene, Maxis isn’t slowing down development onThe Sims 4. The studio has confirmed thatthe game has plenty more to offer, noting that it intends to continually build upon the experience instead of focusingonTheSims 5. Whether or not it cansupport any more expansions(it’s already notoriously buggy) remains to be seen, but one has to imagine that the community is desperately hoping that the Project Rene leak proves to be inaccurate.
