I’ve been waiting over 15 years for a thirdNational Treasuremovie, butNational Treasure: Edge of Historywas a good addition to the original films' universe. Airing from 2022 to 2023,National Treasure: Edge of Historywasa television continuation of the National Treasurefranchisemade famous by lead actor Nicolas Cage. Instead of Cage, the show follows a young woman (Lisette Olivera) whose love of puzzle-solving gets her and her friends involved in a dangerous hunt for history’s long-lost treasure. Though he doesn’t appear in the show,National Treasure: Edge of Historyhonors Cage with some Easter eggs.
WhileNational Treasure: Edge of Historyhad mixed reviews, I thought it was able to accomplish what it aimed to do. It honored the original series, expanded on the lore from the films, and introduced new and engaging plotlines. Unfortunately,National Treasure: Edge of Historywas canceledafter only one season, soNational Treasure 3needs to finally happen. Luckily, the show’scancelation will not impactNational Treasure 3’s development, although the threequel has been in development hell for years.

The Show Matched The Tone Of The Original Films
National Treasure: Edge of Historyexpanded the universe’s lore, which hadn’t been touched since 2007.The show dove deeper into historical myths and lesser-known treasures, like La Malinche and Elvis' secret basement at Graceland. Some of their quests are just as outlandish as the National Treasure originals, like Cage’s iconic quest to steal the Declaration of Independence.

The modern update on the story allowed the series to incorporate more modern technology to aid in the heroes' quests, giving a fresh twist on the typical treasure-hunting formula. Still,National Treasure:Edge of Historyalso managed to keep the same high-energy, intense puzzle-solvingas the original films. In an additional attempt to honor the original, the new series had plenty of cameos and familiar voices for fans of the originals.

I Still Need To See Nicolas Cage Return To The Franchise
National Treasure: Edge of Historyacted as a continuation of theNational Treasureseries. Though it does the original films justice, honoring the lore and influence of the series, it wasn’t exactly what the franchise needed. Namely,the series needs Nicolas Cage. It is still uncertain if Cage will be returning to the role of Benjamin Franklin Gates inNational Treasure 3, but the franchise just isn’t the same without his acting flair and rogue determination. Thankfully,National Treasure’s director is optimistic about Cage’s return, though Cage himself has not said anything about the film.

ThoughNational Treasure: Edge of Historywas a compelling addition to the National Treasure universe,it hasn’t satisfied my need to see the new movie, hopefully led by Cage. Even though I’ve been waiting over 15 years for the third movie,National Treasure: Edge of Historywas a good contribution to ease the wait for the third film.
