Joshua Williamson and Juan Ferreyra’sBatman and Robin#11 kicks off a new story arc that takes Bruce and Damian to the mythical Dinosaur Island on a quest to bringBane to justice for murdering Alfred Pennyworth.
It’s been five years since the Gotham Rogue killed the fan-favorite Bat-Family member, making this confrontation a long time coming. However, before Batman and Robin can face Bane, they must first navigate the treacherous wilderness of Dinosaur Islandand survive the prehistoric creatures that inhabit it—a task the Dark Knight is finding exceptionally difficult.

Dinosaur Island: The One Place Even Batman Can’t Fully Prepare For
After several run-ins with dinosaurs, Batman, Robin, andMaya “Nobody” Ducard, Damian’s long-time friend, come upon poachers loading up various dinosaurs for experimentation and profit. Maya tells them to hold off, and soon the reason becomes clear. Bane enters the scene, using non-lethal force to dispatch the trespassers on what he claims is his island. While Batman and Maya are engrossed in watching Bane’s unusual behavior,Robin seizes the moment. He sneaks off, mounts a dinosaur, and charges toward the Gotham Roguewith undetermined intent.
Batman and Maya immediately try to follow Robin, hoping to prevent the boy from killing Bane in a fit of revenge. However, they are soon intercepted by a herd of dinosaurs, shifting their priority from stopping Damian to surviving the prehistoric creatures. During this chaotic encounter,Bruce remarks, “I miss Gotham,” highlighting his preference for dealing with criminally insane rogues and crime-ridden streets over Dinosaur Island. The fact that Batman doesn’t pull out any unique gadgets, like anti-dinosaur repellent (see:Batman’s Anti-Shark Repellent), underscores that even the Dark Knight is out of his depth when it comes to handling dinosaurs.

The History of Dinosaur Island: Are the Dinosaurs Real or Animatronic? (We Have the Answer)
Dinosaur Island has a complicated history regarding whether its inhabitants are real dinosaurs or animatronics. In one of its earliest appearances, Bill Finger and Bob Kane’sBatman#35 (1946) depicted the island as an amusement park filled with animatronic dinosaurs, including one that became a permanent fixture in the Batcave. Another early interpretation, Robert Kanigher’sStar-Spangled War Stories#90 (May 1960), portrayed the island as being inhabited by creatures otherwise extinct in the normal world, including real dinosaurs.BatmanandRobin#11 seems to draw from Kanigher’s lore, turning their adventure into a true Jurassic Park experience.
