The Marvelsmight be theMarvel Cinematic Universe’s lowest-grossing movie, but I believe that it has the potential to age better than many other entries in the franchise, and a key plot it set up might help make that a reality. The Marvels' box office is one of the most shocking things to happen to the MCU. While there were certainly elements related to the state of the MCU, the hate againstCaptain Marvel, the Hollywood strikes preventingThe Marvels' castfrom promoting the movie, and more that hurt its performance,The Marvelsgrossing only $206.1 million worldwide was bizarre.

I enjoyed the film and feel likeThe Marvelsdoes not deserve to be considered one of theMCU’s worst movies, no matter what its box office might lead one to believe. Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel, and Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau made for a fun trio full of chemistry, anchoringThe Marvels' space adventure. I hope that with time, the MCU impact ofThe Marvelswill have more fans looking back at it in a more positive light, withthe upcoming Avengers movies possibly paying off a majorThe Marvelssetup, which could help that process.

Maria Rambeau, aka Binary, speaks to Monica at the end of The Marvels

The Marvels Established An X-Men Universe & Locked An MCU Hero In It

The Mutants Are Slowly Entering The MCU

The Marvelswas all about the different relationships between its main trio of heroes. Kamala Khan looked up to Captain Marvel, hoping that her idol could be the superhero mentor that the young girl needed. On the other hand, Monica Rambeau had been in a similar role with Carol Danvers in the past, but after Carol was absent when Maria Rambeau — Monica’s mother — needed her the most, the relationship between the two of them took a turn for the worse. It was interesting to see those relationships play out throughout the film, keeping the cosmic adventure grounded in hard-hitting drama.

Monica was in a new universe where a variant of her mother was alive as a superhero and a version of Kelsey Grammer’s Beast from the X-Men movies appeared.

The Marvels' endingwas quite emotional, with Monica locking herself in another universe to save the one where her loved ones were. I thought it was heartbreaking that Captain Marvel tried to fly as fast as she could to save Monica and was unable to reach her in time.

Which X-Men Character Maria Rambeau Plays In The Marvels' Ending

Maria Rambeau has had quite a journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her latest appearance in The Marvels has raised some major questions.

Then,The Marvels' post-credits scenerevealed that Monica was in a new universe where a variant of her mother was alive as a superhero anda version of Kelsey Grammer’s Beast from the X-Men movies appeared. Marvel shockingly established an X-Men universe in what would be the MCU’s lowest-grossing movie.

The Marvels' Setup Could Be Paid Off In A Huge Way

With Monica trapped in another universe, Captain Marvel will not rest until she can bring her home. SinceThe Marvelswas a major box office bomb,I don’t think the MCU will end up makingCaptain Marvel 3. Due to that, Brie Larson’s story as Carol Danvers is more likely to play out in the next two Avengers movies, 2026’sAvengers: Doomsdayand 2027’sAvengers: Secret Wars. There are currently no announced MCU projects before the Avengers films that I could see Captain Marvel playing a major role in, so the search for Monica should be saved for them.

The Multiverse Saga already has the perfect way to bring Monica back inAvengers: Doomsday. The movie could follow several different incursions beforeSecret Warsis all about Battleworld. One of the Earths that collide with the main Earth-616 could be that of the X-Men seen inThe Marvels.

An incursion is the event when two universes collide with one another and one or both of them are destroyed in the process.

It would be the easiest way for the MCU to bring in the mutant team, similar to what Marvel appears to be doing with the Fantastic Four. This would allow Marvel to pick and choose which Fox X-Men actors could return as their characters in the MCU, exemplified by Grammer’s Beast.

I Want The Marvels To Achieve Avengers: Age Of Ultron’s Comeback MCU Status

The Team-Up Movie Could Find New Life As Fans Rewatch It

I’m convinced thatThe Marvels' X-Men setup could be how the movie finds new life after its initial release. The reason for that is what has happened withAvengers: Age of Ultron. The MCU movie received a lot of criticism when it was first released. However, after multiple beloved projects paid off moments and storylines that the Avengers film had set up years before,Age of Ultronis now seen by many in a much more positive light. I thinkThe Marvels' possible impact on the next Avengers movies, and perhaps the MCU overall, could do the same for it.

The Marvelscould not only be how the X-Men become part of the next two Avengers movies, but alsohow the mutants enter the MCU once and for all. Few MCU films have had such a major impact on the franchise like whatThe Marvelswould have if that were to happen. As such, I’m hoping that we get the MCU’s X-Men through that post-credits scene, both because I can’t wait to see the team finally arrive, but also because I hope it leads toThe Marvelsbeing appreciated more in the future.
