Since straitlaced times , man have devised a method acting of create illusionary ghosts . This illusion , known as Pepper ’s touch , was used at carnival and might be a great addition to your haunted business firm .
sorcerous tricks are referred to as “ smoke and mirrors , ” but the real hoaxer here is light . Light fool the great unwashed into believing that some images are three - dimensional when they ’re flat on a screen . Light tricks people into imagine that object underwater are nowhere near where they really are . Light is the ultimate illusionist , and with Pepper ’s Ghost , and the mirrors are just along for the drive .
Panes of glass are supposedly see - through , but most of them are at least partial mirrors . They meditate back some of the light that collide with them , which is why we often see our own reflections in the window of fund and home ( just before we surge a brick on through for that angelical , dulcet robbery ) . This never works when there is light on the other side of the chalk ( and not just because bright lights stand for that it ’s a spoiled time to loot ) . The deluge of light through the windows swim out the “ spiritual ” image of the reflection .

John Henry Pepper saw this and figured out how to rig it on level . A section of plate glass was set on a dark microscope stage . If a spotlight shone on a person stand in front of it , the light from that person would score the chicken feed , and some of it would ponder back . The bright surface area would glow and look unintelligible , but the dour area would look see - through .
Because people are used to light jaunt in straight lines — and because shabu is for the most part crystal clear — looker would interpret this light source as coming from behind the unobserved glass instead of a reflection . If the unhorse somebody is ten foot in front of the drinking glass , the the great unwashed would see the “ ghost ” as being ten feet behind the glass . Of course , the illusion does n’t make if people can see both . If you angle the glass at one end of the stage , keep the edge of the glass concealed , and obscure the brightly - lit person at the other sharpness of the microscope stage behind a pall , the interview will only see the “ ghostly ” reflexion .
The angles have to be just right . If the audience is too much to one side or another , the ghost will be cut off at the edge of the battery-acid of glass . As long as the angle of the witness is moderate , they ’ll see a ghostlike figure . A few lights or subtle mirrors and the “ ghost ” will be able to see them as well and interact with them in real clip .

It just takes a little practice ready up the angles , using fabric to block off the ambient light source from the spotlight , and keeping the audience in one subdivision of the way . Of course , to set one up in your house you ’ll have to have a large pane of chicken feed . If you only have a pocket-sized one , I ’m sure a ghost hamster in a corner will be just as spooky as a human .
