In the seventh and final season ofYoung Sheldon, the Cooper family was dealt a devastating blow as George Cooper (Lance Barber) suffered a fatal heart attack unexpectedly.
Holland revealed toEntertainment Weeklythat Georgie’s own struggle with the events of theYoung Sheldonseries finale will be explored inGeorgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. While the co-creator promised that Georgie would retain his optimism and that early episodes wouldn’t tackle the subject head-on, the series will see Georgie feel the pressure to become the pillar of support his family needs. It’s definitely a piece of the show and a piece of his character — he’s still this bright, sunny optimist, but he has this little bit of pain that’s still hanging in there.
I think he promised his dad in the Young Sheldon finale that he would take care of everyone, and I think he takes that responsibility seriously. So he has a new wife and a baby and in-laws, but he also has a teenage sister who might be not handling her situation very well and needs some looking in on, and a mom who’s grieving, and a grandmother who’s still in town. So there’s a lot on his plate.
Georgie’s Struggle Will Have To Address His Big Bang Theory Backstory
Georgie And Sheldon’s Relationship Was Strained In The Original Series
For fans of bothYoung SheldonandThe Big Bang Theory, Georgie feeling the full pressure of caring for his family will come as no surprise. In his debut inThe Big Bang Theoryseason 11, an older Georgie (played by Jerry O’Connell) was on bad terms with Sheldon and refused to come to Sheldon’s wedding because of it. When confronted about this, Georgie admitted he envied Sheldon’s golden child status while having to support the family in the wake of his father’s passing, leaving long-held scars.
However, it is also likely that the spinoffmay show things aren’t as they seem.
As such, whileYoung Sheldonrevealed that the titular character’s opinions about his family were often biased or misunderstandings, it is likely Georgie’s feelings towards his brother will be a point that the new spinoff stays more loyal to. As seen by the series' title, it is clear thatGeorgie & Mandy’s First Marriageis already acknowledging the unsuccessful days in his love life, so it’s safe to assume it won’t shy away from his estranged sibling either. However, it is also likely that the spinoffmay show things aren’t as they seem.
As another prequel, it is inevitable thatGeorge & Mandy’s First Marriagewill have to face the less glamorous elements of thecharacter established inThe Big Bang Theory. Despite this, it’s a relief that Holland hopes to ease viewers into this, preparing them before diving into Georgie’s conflict. With the promise that Georgie’s optimism will still be on display, his journey could end up being surprisingly powerful.
