Like in the originalFrostpunk, keeping your citizens and buildings warm inFrostpunk 2is the top priority for success. Not only will warm citizens stay happier and refrain from overthrowing you, but they’ll also be more productive and have a higher level of Hope. Keeping my city warm in the originalFrostpunkis the most annoying mechanic to keep track of, but as long as you understand how it works, you’ll be okay.
Unlike the originalFrostpunkgame, you build your city in designated districts, and each district has its own heating needs. It’s one of their upkeep costs and some of the improvements and buildings you’re able to construct require a certain level of heat in the area. If you don’t maintain this heat level, people have a higher chance of getting sick, no matter the district type. Sick citizens can’t work, so make sure to keep them warm and happy to survive the frozen wasteland.

How Heat Works In Frostpunk 2
Pay Attention To The Environment, As Well As Surrounding Districts
Frostpunk 2has iterated on the original plan for heating quite a bit since the first game.Frostpunk 2retains the brazier-style Heating Hubs fromFrostpunkbut also introduces a mechanic that will influence the location of your districts.Nivariasexplains how Heat works in a video on YouTube. In this game, there are bonuses that can give you extra heat if so many of the requirements are met. The three requirements are as follows:
Note that some districts will lose quality when placed next to one another. Housing districts don’t like being placed next to industrial districts and will gain squalor over time. Pay attention to these types of things when you’re planning your city.

Physical location plays a big part in how well-heated your district will be.Putting your districts in well-protected areas that are hidden from the wind and weather will make them easier to heat. Conversely, districts on top of hills or in exposed areas, indicated by a red border before you place them down, will be more challenging to keep warm and will likely be lower quality.
The most important difference between Heat inFrostpunkand Heat inFrostpunk 2is that Heat no longer needs micromanaging in the same way. Gone is the infrared heat map from the original game; instead, players have a “Heat Need” value, and as long as you can produce the fuel to meet that need, you’re good to go.Essentially, Heat relies on the amount of fuel you can produce, so produce as much as you can.

Frostpunk 2 Review: The City Builder That Made Me Evil
Frostpunk 2 innovatively iterates on the original as a difficult, multifaceted city builder that combines management with meaningful societal choices.
Best Ways To Generate Heat
Use The Right Laws And Research
It’s no surprise that the main way to generate heat inFrostpunk 2is the generator, but it takes more and more fuel the higher you upgrade it. This means you will either have toexpand your city and find deeper reserves of oil or coal or pass laws that limit the use of heating to conserve your precious fuel. This game has three fuel types: oil, coal, and steam. They often spawn far enough away from your city center that you’ll need to Frostbreak to get to them.
At one point in the campaign, you’ll unlock Expeditions, allowing you to explore the areas around New London to find more resources and, sometimes, settlements. One such settlement is the Old Dreadnaught, which veteran players will recognize fromFrostpunk. This is where you’ll eventually find oil and rely on this settlement as your coal reserves begin to dwindle. You’ll still want to use up all the coal nodes you’re able to in New London.

Once you’ve expanded to a resource node, you can place an Extraction District on that tile to take advantage of the resource.Remember, districts in better geographic spots will be more accessible to heat, so see if there are any well-shielded areas that you can harvest first. When expanding, you’ll want to look for the most fuel-efficient option; is your Extraction District going to provide more fuel than it uses to heat? If the answer to that question is yes, you’re good to go. If not, look for another way to increase your heating capability.
District types are just one of a fewnew systems introduced inFrostpunk 2.
Research is another good way to increase your heating efficiency without needing more fuel. Some of these options include Housing Insulation and Food Energy Efficiency, both of which reduce the fuel consumption of their respective districttypes.A few Lawshave similar impacts, but Laws often come with drawbacks rather than outright benefiting you, such as increased tension, decrease in production efficiency, etcetera.
The Best Cold Reduction Strategy
Balance The Demands Of Your Population With The Resources You Have Available
Of course, there comes a time in every leader’s life when they have to draw a line between the comfort of their people and their capability to provide that comfort. In such a desolate game as Frostpunk 2, these demands are often for basic human needs, but you’ll likely find yourself unable to provide. In such cases, it’s important to remember that your people will live feeling cold for a little while as long as you can ensure they’ll be warm again. If you run out of resources near your city, don’t be afraid of sending teams out to explore the Frostland for more resources.
It’s okay if your tension level—which functions asHope did in Frostpunk—rises just a bit as you ration fuel, especially in the colder times. You can push off turning the generator back on just a bit, as long as you have fuel on the way. Just make sure that you have a plan for unexpected events, as nothing in the wasteland is guaranteed. Life is a luxury inFrostpunk 2, so guard it closely.
