All Quiet On The Western Front Book vs. Movie: Biggest Differences

Netflix’s All Quiet On The Western Front generally stays true to its book source material, but the movie still makes some notable changes.

Der Pass (2018-2023)

Felix Riedle (2 Episodes, 2023)

Der Pass, orPagan Peakin some countries, is a German-Austrian crime drama series that premiered in 2019 on Sky Deutschland. The show follows two detectives, German officer Ellie (Julia Jentsch) and Austrian officer Gedeon (Nicholas Ofczarek), working in the border area between Traunstein, Germany and Salzburg, Austria. Felix Kammerer appears in season 3 as Felix Riedle, a serial killer who is being trained by an older murderer, Stefan Polt (August Diehl).

Though he only appears in two episodes of the series, Kammerer makes good use of his screen time. As Riedle, Kammerer is an unnerving, unreadable presence who rolls a die to determine if we kill his victim. It’s a dark and cruel part that Kammerer still imbues with humanity, making the character one of the better moderndepictions of a serial killer on TV.

All Quiet on the Western Front

All Quiet on the Western Front

Based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel, All Quiet on the Western Front is a World War I movie following Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) as he quickly realizes that war isn’t about becoming a hero, but rather just surviving the terrifying experience. The film received critical praise upon release and even won four Academy Awards.

The third adaptation ofAll Quiet on the Western Frontby Erich Maria Remarque, the 2022 German movie distributed by Netflix, is a harrowing and grim retelling of the famous WWI story. Felix Kammerer stars as Paul Bäumer, the point-of-view character who is drafted into the Imperial German Army during the waning years of the war. At first excited for the adventure, Paul’s spirit and humanity are quickly broken by the horrors on the battlefield.

All Quiet on the Western Frontwas nominated for nine Academy Awards and won Best International Feature Film, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design.

It’s a remarkable bit of acting from Kammerer, who had never appeared in a feature-length movie before this role. At the beginning of the film, Kammerer plays Paul as a bouncy, excitable young man, but his downward spiral throughout is movingly and subtly told. Even caked in mud and dirt,Kammerer makes the heartbreaking emotions on Paul’s face perfectly clear, lending an authentic and gripping performance to the movie.
