Where The Rings Of Power Fits Into The Middle-earth Timeline

Middle-earth’s timeline covers over 60,000 years, with Frodo’s Lord of the Rings story featured at the end - so where does Rings of Power fit?

In Tolkien’s stories, Elendil eventually leavesNúmenor to settle in Middle-earth. There, Elendil builds the kingdom of Arnor, while his sons, Isildur and Anárion, found the kingdom of Gondor. It was said that the people of western Númenor are more faithful to the old ways and friends of the elves, explaining Elendil’s openness to do the same. In Elendil’s vision, it is not confirmed where he was traveling to. However,it could be revealed that Elendil was heading west in the vision to reunite with his youngest son, who will eventually sail to Middle-earth with him. This could mean Anárion’s introduction inThe Rings of Powerseason 3’s story, further establishing the future kings of Gondor alongside Elendil and Isildur.

Why Elendil Didn’t See Númenor’s Destruction In The Palantír

Míriel’s Vision Did Not Translate To Elendil

As alluded to, Elendil’s vision did not replicate that of Míriel’s, specifically the giant wave washing Númenor beneath the waves. The reason for this comes from the mysterious nature of the Palantír itself and how it gives different people different glimpses of the past or the present. InThe Rings of Power, the Palantír gives Míriel and Elendil premonitions for the future, though different futures depend on which person is looking into the seeing stone.

The future of Elendil is one of promise, with the former Sea Guard captain leaving Númenor’s destruction behind him for a future in Middle-earth with his sons…

It is known from Tolkien’s works that Elendil survives Númenor’s destruction, while Míriel is killed as the wave sinks the island beneath the ocean. As such, the future of Elendil is one of promise, with the former Sea Guard captain leaving Númenor’s destruction behind him for a future in Middle-earth with his sons. Míriel, on the other hand, does not see anything but the giant wave, hinting at her bleak future inThe Rings of Power’s future seasons in which she will sink alongside the kingdom she worked so hard to keep afloat.
